Abstract: A vehicle door hinge for a passenger or driver side vehicle door. The hinge has a chassis mounting plate securely fastenable to the vehicle frame, a swingarm securely fastenable to the vehicle door, a bi-directional rotation mechanism connecting the chassis mounting plate to the swingarm and allowing rotation of the swingarm in a substantially horizontal plane and in a substantially vertical plane, first and second bearing surfaces positioned to rotate with the bi-directional rotation mechanism and to bear against each other when the swingarm is rotated in the substantially horizontal plane, and not to bear against each other when the swingarm is rotated in the substantially vertical plane, and a spring attached at one end to the swingarm and at the other end to the vehicle frame or to the chassis mounting plate, for counter-balancing the weight of the vehicle door when the swingarm is rotated in the vertical plane.

Abstract: The invention provides a method of opening a vehicle door in a doorway of a vehicle body, the method comprising: rotating such vehicle door in a horizontal plane of motion until such vehicle door substantially clears such vehicle body; and then rotating such vehicle door in a vertical plane of motion until such vehicle door substantially clears such door way. The invention may be easily retrofitted to existing vehicles or factory installed.

Abstract: This invention describes a novel two way hinge for motor vehicle doors that hinges open at a 20 degree angle, then rotates upward 45 degrees. The motor vehicle door is maintained in the open position by a shock absorber/piston arrangement that is common in the automotive industry. The invention described herein can be installed by an aftermarket shop and/or sold as an easily installed kit. The present invention overcomes the shortcomings of existing hinges by allowing greater access for ingress and egress from existing motor vehicle doors in tight parking situations.
