Patent number: 6827898Abstract: A method and device for extracorporeal treatment of a patient by heating the patient's blood and/or a regional anatomic area which utilizes an optional hemodialysis machine capable of heating the fluids to 48° C., an optional parallel plate dialyzer together with a sorbent-based detoxifier, a tubular heat exchanger and a high flow positive displacement puma-in addition to various probes and catheters. The present invention also includes a disposable tubing set for directing fluids used in extracorporeal hyperthermia procedures. The tubing set contains a fluid reservoir, accommodates the positive displacement pump, and includes a heat exchanger for heating blood or fluid. The specific improvements in extracorporeal heating afforded by this system inhere in the combined high flow of the pump and the high temperature—up to 52° C.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2002Date of Patent: December 7, 2004Assignee: ViaCirq, Inc.Inventors: Michael Fausset, Glenn Keeling, Marc G. Patent number: 6579496Abstract: An apparatus and system for extracorporeal treatment utilizes a hemodialysis machine capable of heating dialysis fluid to 48° C., an optional parallel plate hemodialyzer together with a sorbent-based detoxifier, a tubular heat exchanger and a high flow pump—in addition to various probes and catheters—to effect extracorporeal treatment without adverse physiological effect and without the specific need for general anesthesia. The system inheres in the combined high flow of the pump-up to 2400 ml per minute—and the high temperature—52° C.—achievable in the heat exchanger, which together provide unprecedented speed and efficiency in the administration of hyperthemia treatments. The system is also a potentiating system in the administration of heat sensitive pharmaceutically active agents and is praticularly useful in the isolated anatomic areas of a patient.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1999Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: Viacirq, Inc.Inventors: Michael Fausset, Glenn Keeling, Marc Clupper, Brad Rainier

Patent number: 6348162Abstract: An apparatus for use in whole body hypothermia includes a dialyzer having a blood side and a dialysate side separated by one or more dialysis membranes. A blood pump associated with the a blood circuit established on the blood side circulates blood through the dialyzer at high rates advantageous for hyperthermia treatments. A bypass is included whereby circulated blood can bypass the dialyzer. The bypass aids in preventing blood-side tensioning of dialyzer membranes thereby allowing proper membrane movement to assist in mixing a sorbent suspension circulated on the dialysate side of the dialyzer. A sorbent suspension composition for use as a dialysate in hemodialysis, especially when performed in conjunction with whole body hyperthermia, includes water, a surface adsorptive agent such as charcoal, a cation exchanger, and precipitated calcium phosphate. The precipitated calcium phosphate serves as a reservoir for calcium and phosphate ions to assist in controlling patient blood chemistries.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2000Date of Patent: February 19, 2002Assignee: ViaCirq, Inc.Inventor: Stephen R. Publication number: 20010039441Abstract: Apparatuses for use in whole body hypothermia include a high-flow hyperthermia circuit coupled to a low-flow dialysis circuit in a manner which reduces tensioning of membranes in the dialyzer of the dialysis circuit. The arrangement thereby allows proper membrane movement to assist in mixing a sorbent suspension circulated on the sorbent side of the dialyzer. Additional dialysis apparatuses include advantageous disposable packs including the dialyzer, sorbent heat exchangers arranged to cooperate with heating elements on base units of the apparatuses, and adaptations for very high flow rates useful in the hyperthermic treatment of cancers.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2001Publication date: November 8, 2001Applicant: ViaCirq, Inc.Inventor: Stephen R. Ash
