Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting diseases and abnormalities of a patient's eyes is disclosed. The apparatus includes an image-recording device for recording images of the patient's eyes while illuminated with infrared light and while at least two different meridians of the patient's eyes are illuminated with visible light in a time period shorter than the response time of the patient's eyes. The apparatus further includes a light source for illuminating the patient's eyes with infrared and two different meridians of the patient's eyes with visible light, and a control system for controlling the image-recording device and the light source. In one embodiment, the image-recording device includes a high-speed digital camera, the light source includes a group of infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a pair of flashes, and the control system is a computer system. The invention is useful in detecting both refractive and non-refractive errors of the eyes.
Abstract: Ophthalmic compositions and methods of using the same to simultaneously treat eye surface inflammation and dry eye are disclosed. The ophthalmic preparation contains a tetracycline compound in aqueous solution. The preparation preferably further includes a balance of electrolytes sufficient to maintain or restore essentially normal levels of conjunctival mucus-containing goblet cells and corneal glycogen. These electrolytes can include potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphate.
Abstract: A system for measuring and analyzing an image of a gel electrophoresis, includes measuring apparatus and a processor. The measuring apparatus includes a frame mountable in a fixed location relative to the image, including a bar extending along a first axis, a carriage coupled to the bar and slidable along the first axis, an alignment device extending transversely from the carriage along a second axis for aligning selected components of the image, and a distance sensor operatively coupled to the carriage for sensing the distance travelling by the carriage and generating distance signals. The processor is operatively coupled to the measuring apparatus and processes the distance signals and generates maps based thereon. The subject system is well suited for constructing restriction enzyme maps for an image of bands created by subjecting DNA to gel electrophoresis.

Abstract: A high-frame rate image acquisition and motion analysis system comprising a first arrangement to obtain an image of an object; a second arrangement coupled to the first arrangement to slice the image into N analog segments, where N is equal to an integer greater than one; a third arrangement coupled to the second arrangement to convert the N analog segments into N digital data streams; a fourth arrangement coupled to the third arrangement to store each of the N digital data streams; a fifth arrangement coupled to the first arrangement, the second arrangement, the third arrangement and the fourth arrangement to provide software control of the operation thereof, the fifth arrangement further controlling the first arrangement and the second arrangement to adjust separately predetermined variables of each of the N analog segments and further controlling the fourth arrangement to provide a read out of an adjusted version of the image; a common enclosure for the first arrangement, the second arrangement, the third

Abstract: An apparatus for evaluating the alignment of both eyes of a patient objectively in primary, secondary and tertiary gaze, and the Bielschowsky head tilt positions and to diagnose for phorias, tropias and intermittent tropias. The apparatus has a head restraint and a mounted fixation target in a spaced relationship to the head restraint and having adjustments for adjusting the target along three axis. Electronic shutters are used to occlude each eye during the testing. A camera is used for imaging the eye of a patient having his head in the head restraint with his eyes aligned with the target. The camera is mounted adjacent to the target on the xyz mount.

Abstract: The present invention psychophysically detects earliest signs of loss of vision due to nerve loss in glaucoma and ocular hypertension. An instrument employs a dynamic random dot background field and a movable target that consists of a circular area in which the dots are spatially and temporally coherent. Thus, visual fields will be based on pattern discrimination rather than on conventional measures of luminance discrimination.
