  • Patent number: 7486732
Abstract: A method and apparatus for distributed load multiplexing of multiple encoded signals over a shared communication path include processing that begins by receiving a 1st encoded signal having a 1st varying relative bit rate. The processing continues by receiving a 2nd encoded signal having a 2nd varying relative bit rate. For example, the 1st and 2nd encoded signals may be an MPEG encoded signal including a plurality of I frames, B frames and P frames. The processing continues by aligning multiplexing of the 1st and 2nd encoded signals based on reducing cumulative peak bit rates of the 1st varying relative bit rate and the 2nd varying relative bit rate. For example, the 2nd encoded signal may be delayed via buffering to ensure that the I frames of the 1st and 2nd encoded signals are misaligned.

  • Patent number: 7130362
Abstract: A wireless communication device capable of receiving data using non-standard data includes a receiver section, a demodulation mapping module, a decoding module, and a rate determination module. The receiver section is operably coupled to convert a radio frequency signal into a digital signal. The demodulation mapping module is operably coupled to demodulate the digital signal to produce demodulated data. The decoding module is operably coupled to decode the demodulated data based on the coding rate to produce decoded data. The rate determination module is operably coupled to determine the coding rate from at least one of the digital signal and the demodulated data, wherein the coding rate is one of a plurality of standard coding rates or a non-standard coding rate that is selected for a given transmission.

  • Patent number: 7116731
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adjusting symbol timing and/or symbol interval range of a receive burst of data within a radio receiver include processing that begins by receiving a radio frequency signal that includes bursts of data. The process then continues by determining a frequency offset for the burst of data based on a difference between the transmitter processing rate and a receiver processing rate. The processing then continues by determining a symbol timing offset and/or a symbol interval range offset based on the frequency offset. The process then proceeds by adjusting the initial symbol positioning and/or the symbol interval range offset of a burst of data based on the symbol timing offset.

  • Patent number: 7099951
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing multimedia services to a local area network includes processing that begins by receiving a plurality of channels from at least one multimedia source. The processing continues by receiving selection requests from at least one client module via a communication path. The processing continues by generating a set of channel select commands from the select request. The processing continues by selecting a set of channels from the plurality of channels based on the set of channel select commands. The processing continues by mixing the set of channels into a stream of channel data. The processing then continues by transmitting the stream of channel data via the communication path to the at least one client module such that each client associated with a client module receives the channel data for the respective channels that they had selected.

  • Patent number: 7099398
Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing a non-standard data rate in a wireless communication system include processing that begins by establishing a standard specified data rate for a given transmission. The processing then continues by determining whether the data rate of the transmission can be adjusted from the standard specified data rate by a non-standard data rate adjustment. The processing then continues when the data rate can be adjusted, adjusting the data rate to a non-standard data rate for the given data transmission.

  • Patent number: 7095796
Abstract: A low power radio transmitter includes an intermediate frequency stage, signal-to-pulse conversion module, and a power amplifier. The intermediate frequency stage up-converts the frequency of a base-band digital signal into an N-bit signal at the intermediate frequency. The signal-to-pulse conversion module converts the N-bit signal at the intermediate frequency into a pulse signal of M-bits at the radio frequency. As such, the signal-to-pulse conversion module is taking an N-bit signal (e.g., an 8-bit digital signal) and converting it into an M-bit pulse signal (e.g., a 1-bit pulse stream). Accordingly, the M-bit signal at the radio frequency is essentially a square-wave, which has a peak to average ratio of zero, is subsequently amplified by the power amplifier.

  • Patent number: 7085315
Abstract: A method and apparatus for digital demodulation for use in a wireless communication device include processing that begins by performing a fast Fourier transform to convert a plurality of time domain symbol components representing inbound data into a plurality of frequency domain symbol components. The processing continues by frequency domain equalizing at least some of the plurality of frequency domain symbol components based on a dynamic compensation control signal to dynamically compensate for adverse transmission characteristics of the plurality of time domain symbol components. The processing then continues by generating a plurality of estimated symbols and a plurality of error values for the plurality of compensated frequency domain symbol components.

  • Patent number: 7072632
Abstract: A valid signal may be detected by initializing gain settings of the receiver section. The processing then continues by measuring received signal strength of a signal received by the receiver section to produce a 1st received signal strength indication (RSSI). The processing continues by adjusting the gain setting of the receiver section such that the 1st received signal strength indication is a predetermined offset less than a signal strength threshold. The process then continues by measuring the received signal strength of the gain adjusted representation of the signal to produce a 2nd received signal strength indication. The processing continues by appending a 2nd offset to the 2nd received signal strength value to produce an adjusted received signal strength indication value when the 2nd received signal strength value drifts from the signal strength threshold less the predetermined offset.

  • Patent number: 7058677
Abstract: A method for selectable quantization for use in an encoder for compressing video and/or audio data includes processing that begins by receiving discrete cosine transform data of an encoded signal. The processing continues by obtaining a quantization table. The processing then continues by obtaining a plurality of scaling factors. The process then continues by generating a plurality of quantized value sets of the discrete cosine transform data based on the quantization table and the plurality of quantization scaling factors. The resulting data is then multiplied separately by each of the quantization scaling factors to produce the plurality of quantized values sets. The process then continues by selecting one of the plurality of quantized value sets based on quantization selection criteria.

  • Patent number: 7042941
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the amount of quantization processing used within an encoder that compresses video and/or audio data include processing that begins by receiving discrete cosine transform data of a block of a frame of data. The process then proceeds by obtaining a quantization table related to the frame of data. The processing then continues by obtaining a quantization scaling factor related to the frame. The processing then continues by determining whether quantization processing limits have been exceeded for quantization of preceding blocks of the frame of data. If the number of bits processed for the preceding blocks exceeds a certain desired level, the processing increases the quantization scaling factor. The processing then continues by generating quantization data from the discrete cosine transform data, the quantization table and the increased quantization scaling factor.
