Abstract: A speech recognition system receives and analyzes speech input from a user in order to recognize and accept a response from the user. Under certain conditions, information about the response expected from the user may be available. In these situations, the available information about the expected response is used to modify the behavior of the speech recognition system by taking this information into account. The modified behavior of the speech recognition system comprises adjusting the rejection threshold when speech input matches the predetermined expected response.

Abstract: Possible errors made by a speech recognition system may be identified without using a transcript of words input to the system. A method for model adaptation for a speech recognition system includes determining an error rate, corresponding to either recognition of instances of a word or recognition of instances of various words, without using a transcript of words input to the system. The method may further include adjusting an adaptation, of the model for the word or various models for the various words, based on the error rate. An apparatus identifies possible errors made by a speech recognition system without using a transcript of words input to the system. An apparatus for model adaptation for a speech recognition system includes a processor adapted to estimate an error rate, corresponding to either recognition of instances of a word or recognition of instances of various words, without using a transcript of words input to the system.

Abstract: A headset is adapted to be positioned on a head and includes a headband assembly for spanning across the head of a user, an earcup assembly coupled proximate one end of the headband assembly, and a power source assembly coupled proximate the other end of the headband assembly. A flexible stabilizing strap has a first end coupled to the headset proximate the earcup assembly and a second end coupled to the headset terminal proximate the power source assembly. The stabilizing strap is adapted to engage the head of a user to further stabilize the headset on the head.
Abstract: A communication system comprises a terminal configured for being able to communicate with a computer and to operate according to at least one operational parameter. A peripheral device for use with the terminal has a characterizing parameter associated therewith. The terminal is operable for reading the characterizing parameter from the peripheral device when the device is coupled to the terminal. The terminal is further operable for configuring itself to operate according to an operational parameter associated with the characterizing parameter of the peripheral device.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a communication system for care providers and a method of managing patient care utilizing same. The system comprises a patient communication unit configured to be positioned proximate to a patient and operable to capture a patient call that includes speech input of the patient, a central console communicably coupled with the patient communication unit for receiving the call from the patient communication unit, and a portable communication unit configured to be carried by a care provider and communicably coupled with the central console, the portable communication unit operable to receive the call from the central console, to capture speech input of the care provider, and to play at least a portion of the patient speech input, the portable communication unit further operable to convert at least a portion of the care provider speech input into at least one command associated with the call.
Abstract: A communications system transmits messages via a wireless network to multiple users nearly simultaneously in real-time. Each user has a terminal that receives a message and plays the message for the user. The terminal may also wait for the user to verbally acknowledge the arrival of the message before continuing with its normally executing application. The sender of the message may track, for each intended recipient, the delivery of the message, the accessing of the message by the user, and the acknowledgement by the user that the message was understood.

Abstract: A device having a processing unit with a processor and controls disposed on the device. The controls are operable for controlling the processing unit and operation of the device. The controls include at least a first button with capacitive sensing. The first button is operable to generate a first indication to a user when touched and further operable to interact with the processing unit to execute a function when depressed.
Abstract: An adapter and apparatus for coupling a corded peripheral device with a portable terminal. The adapter may be used to convert the portable terminal to include an electrical connector having a break-away capability for connecting a corded peripheral device with the terminal. The connector is adapted to disconnect from the portable terminal when a sufficient force is applied to the cord, which disengages the peripheral device from the portable terminal. The ability of the cord to break-away from the portable terminal prevents damage not only to the connector, but also to the cord, peripheral, and terminal.
Abstract: A headset assembly includes a moisture-proof and temperature resistant headset module. The headset module is sealed against moisture and is constructed from materials that are durable and can withstand constant use, physical abuse, and rapid swings in temperature and other environmental conditions. Furthermore, the headset module is interchangeable with a variety of headset frames so as to provide comfort during prolonged use and in high ambient noise environments.
