Abstract: In a mobile telecommunications network including at least a first type of radio access network and a second type of radio access network and a mobile terminal, a method of establishing a voice communication with the mobile terminal including: receiving a voice communication request in relation to the mobile terminal on the second radio access network type; determining a parameter associated with a terminal characteristic; and using the parameter to determine whether to establish the voice communication on the first type of radio access network or maintain the voice communication on the second type of radio access network. Preferably the determined parameter is a parameter relating to a terminal type for the mobile terminal, and is determined from the terminal's IMEI.

Abstract: In a communications network including a plurality of communication channels through which communications are configured to be transmitted between a plurality of network users, a method of managing communications to be transmitted to a particular user from the plurality of communication channels and/or network users, the method including: receiving a communication from a particular communication channel or another network user, the communication intended for transmission to a particular user; determining whether or not to transmit the communication to the particular user, based upon whether or not the communication satisfies one or more predefined characteristics relating to the particular communication channel and/or the other network user; and transmitting the communication to the particular user when the communication satisfies the predefined characteristics.

Abstract: A method of controlling an attach procedure of a device 1 to a telecommunications network 140 following receipt of an attach rejection from the telecommunications network, the method including assessing the authenticity of the attach rejection, and selecting a criterion for performing a subsequent attach attempt by the device to the network in dependence upon the authenticity assessment. The authenticity may be assessed by determining whether the rejection was received by an authenticated communication link or a signed message. The authenticity may also be assessed by checking that the cause of the reject is consistent with information held by the device. The selected criterion may be power cycling of the device or the passage of a time period.

Abstract: A method of mapping a plurality of symbols from a first communication scheme (e.g. GSM) to frames of a second communication scheme (e.g. CPRI) to enable data of the symbols to be transmitted over a communication link that operates according to the second communication scheme, wherein N of the symbols are transmitted in a sequence n=0, . . . , n?1 and X of the frames are transmitted in a sequence x=o, . . . , x?1, the method including transmitting data of the symbol n during a frame x, where x is dependent upon the value n*TF*fs where TF is the duration of each of the symbols from the first communication scheme and fs is the frequency of transmission of the frames of the second communication scheme.

Abstract: A base station reselection method for a mobile terminal camped on a base station, which mobile terminal performs a cell reselection function in accordance with reselection parameters. The method characterized by according a different priority to respective radio resource types and varying the reselection parameters in dependence upon the radio resource type of the base station on which the mobile terminal is camped to cause the mobile terminal to preferentially reselect to a higher priority radio resource type when available. A further base station reselection method includes determining radio characteristics of at least one neighboring base station at a frequency, characterized by varying the frequency at which said radio characteristics are determined in dependence upon the rate of movement of the mobile terminal.

Abstract: A mobile telecommunications network includes a radio access network with base stations and one or more additional access points. An access point is connected to a network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point is configured to appear to a mobile terminal as a conventional base station—that is, for example, it communicates with the mobile terminal using GSM or UMTS transport protocols and does not require any modification to a standard GSM or UMTS mobile terminal. Arrangements are disclosed which monitor the quality of the broadband connection between the access point and the network core and which cause the mobile terminal to handover to a neighboring base station in the event that the quality of the broadband connection becomes too poor for the class of communication between the mobile terminals registered with the access point to be performed satisfactorily.
