  • Patent number: 4634401
Abstract: A spider for a Hooke's joint typically includes a center piece and four pins radiating therefrom. The pins are all located in a plane which intersects the rotation axis of the spider. Between adjacent pins, the center piece has a transition section, which is machined to define a concave fillet. In the preferred form, the fillet is shaped to define an arched, toric outer surface, and particularly as viewed along a longitudinal cross section along the rotation axis of the center piece, the outer surface comprises two partially cylindrical fillets symmetrically located at opposite sides of the plane through which the axes of the pin pass. These two fillets are machined by a tool that moves longitudinally along a path parallel to the plane of the pin axes for machining and the tool is swung around a swivel axis parallel to the plane of the pin axis for forming the fillets symmetrically of the plane of the pin axis.

  • Patent number: 4348874
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a multiple-spline hub that is particularly useful for a telescopic shaft for transmitting torque. There is a thin-walled tube section which is developed as a toothed profile tube having teeth of trapezoidal cross-section. There is a thicker-walled tube to which the connecting element of the telescopic shaft, such as a joint fork, is attached. The toothed tube section is inserted in the bore of the thicker-walled tube and the crests of the teeth of the tube section engage the interior surface of the bore of the tube. The crests of the teeth are bonded by brazing to the bore of the thicker-walled tube.

  • Patent number: 4300361
Abstract: This invention concerns an articulated coupling or universal coupling including two coupling halves or forks coupled together. A respective machine part is connectable to each of the coupling halves. A supporting component, such as a bracing rod, extends between the coupling halves. On at least one of the coupling halves is a first surface. A second surface is connected to the rod. A spring, or the like, biases the second surface on the rod against the first surface on the coupling half and such bias blocks the coupling half thus engaged from pivoting, tilting or deflecting. The rod or second surface is so arranged that upon the thus supported coupling half being connected to its respective machine part, the cooperating first and second surfaces are no longer so biased together as to prevent the respective coupling half from pivoting, tilting or deflecting.

  • Patent number: 4271685
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a universal joint having two joint yokes. There is a ring having two pivot pairs on it with each pivot pair being for the two arms of a respective yoke. A hub is defined centrally of one yoke, and the hub extends through the ring. A telescoping shaft extends through the hub and through the ring and the shaft is connectible to an object to be joined by the joint. The shaft rotates with the hub and its respective one yoke. The other yoke is connectible to the other object that is to be joined by the joint. In a further embodiment there is a series of two of the universal joints. The hub of each joint receives the same common shaft.

  • Patent number: 4262405
Abstract: A universal coupling has two coupling forks; each fork is an integral unit with two fork eyes; an opening in each eye for receiving a bearing sleeve; a crosspiece with pins thereon, each pin to be received in a bearing sleeve; each bearing sleeve has a base; a bore through the crosspiece and extending along the axes of two aligned pins thereof; an aligned bore in the base of each bearing sleeve; a tie rod extends through the bores in the bearing sleeve bases and the crosspiece; a guide sleeve holds the tie rod at the other fork eye from the fork eye having a bearing sleeve installed; a pressure applying piston and cylinder connected between the tie rod and one of the bearing sleeves is operated for moving that bearing sleeve into the fork eye opening.

  • Patent number: 4242889
Abstract: A coupling having two coupling members with engaging faces; each face has a plurality of annular, concentric ribs of trapezoidal cross-section and grooves correspondingly shaped to receive the ribs on the other face; less than the entire contact area of each face is ribbed; a spigot on one in a recess coupling member is received for initially positioning the coupling members; devices for clamping the coupling members together.

  • Patent number: 4219286
Abstract: A coupling for rigidly connecting two coaxial machine parts, like shafts, to transmit torque: The coupling includes first and second coupling halves, each having a respective end surface and the end surfaces abutting and being secured together. There are radially extending openings around the coupling and being defined by cooperatingly shaped and placed grooves in both end faces of the coupling halves. The grooves are profiled, e.g. semi-circularly or trapezoidally, thereby defining circular or hexagonal openings, respectively, when the coupling halves are secured. A removable cotter of similar profile to the opening therefor is inserted in each opening. The cotter has a slightly larger cross-section than the opening and the cotter and/or the opening in the vicinity of the cotter are deformable upon the coupling halves being brought together. Various recesses through the cotter permit deformation thereof. Alternatively, the flanges at the abutting ends of the coupling halves are weakened to deform.
