Abstract: A method for the modification of the surface of polytetrafluoroethylene or of copolymers consisting mainly of polytetrafluoroethylene by the action of fluorides of silicone, germanium, phosphorus or arsenic on the surface of the copolymer which is heated to at least 150.degree. C. in the presence of moisture or by the subsequent action of water or steam. The fluorides used penetrate into the polymer to be modified and form a polymeric, tightly adhering network during hydrolysis.
