  • Patent number: 7259382
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a device and method for exposing a person to ultraviolet radiation in tanning wavelengths which is emitted from a discharge lamp having a plurality of grooves formed in its outer periphery along a helical path. The discharge lamp includes, inter alia, an elongated vitreous tube, first and second electrode assemblies and a coating on the interior the interior of the tube. The coating is applied on an interior of the tube along the entire length for emitting ultraviolet radiation in tanning wavelengths when a voltage is applied across the first and second electrodes. In a first representative embodiment, the plurality of grooves are interconnected and the helical path is continuous. Alternatively, the plurality of grooves can be axially offset and the helical path can be discontinuous.

  • Patent number: 6919676
Abstract: Disclosed is a new and useful discharge lamp for use in applications, such as tanning and technical lighting, and a method of making the same. The discharge lamp includes, inter alia, a vitreous tube having an axial length, a base phosphor coating applied on the interior of the tube along the entire axial length, and at least one phosphor over-coat applied over the base phosphor coating in one or more axial regions of the vitreous tube. The phosphor over-coat is applied to less than the total length of the vitreous tube. In a representative embodiment, the vitreous tube has an outer periphery which is smooth, but in alternate embodiments, a helical groove path is formed therein over at least a portion of the axial length.

  • Patent number: 6777702
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a device and method for exposing a substrate to ultraviolet radiation emitted from a discharge lamp having regions of varying intensity along its length. The discharge lamp includes, inter alia, an elongated vitreous tube, first and second electrode assemblies and a coating on the interior the interior of the tube. The elongated vitreous tube has an outer periphery and axially opposed first and second ends which define an axial length for the tube therebetween. The outer periphery has a plurality of regions defined along said axial length, wherein a first region extends over a predetermined first portion of said axial length and has a helical groove path defining a series of axially spaced apart grooves formed therein. The first region emits ultraviolet radiation having an intensity greater than that emitted from a second region of the outer periphery.

  • Patent number: 5122074
Abstract: A one-piece, molded plastic spring clip, which is substantially inverted U-shape in cross-section, has a bight portion including an opening receiving a screw threaded fastener to attach the clip to the rear surface of a lamp holder so that the screw threaded fastener does not extend from the clip through a headed flange portion of a lamp holder to provide a liquid conduit which could potentially short the lamp. The clip is provided with legs extending from either side of the bight and each leg has a pair of spaced, parallel wing portions extending outwardly from its associated leg to expand when inserted through the mounting plate. The wing portions provide vertical shoulders to seat the lamp holder on a vertical support in conjunction with a compressible coil spring provided on the opposite side of the mounting panel or vertical support between the headed flange and support to exert pressure on the clip shoulders against the rear of the mounting panel.
