Patent number: 5618063Abstract: A document capable of providing multiple colors under the application of heat comprising a support having at least one surface bearing a first coating comprising a substantially colorless, heat activatable chromogenic composition capable of producing a first color under the application of heat, and a second coating comprising a localized coating of a substantially colorless, heat activatable chromogenic composition capable of producing a second color under the application of heat. Each chromogenic composition comprises a chromogenic compound and a color developer that are substantially colorless solids in physical contact prior to reaction, but which can chemically react to produce a visible colored image by application of heat at temperatures above room temperature. Under the application of heat from a thermal printer, by quickly striking the chromogenic composition with a fingernail or blunt object to produce frictional heat, or other heat application, multicolored images are provided.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1995Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: Wallace Computer Services, Inc.Inventors: John C. Patent number: 5608639Abstract: An automatic verification or matching system is provided for insuring that a multiple-part printed product, such as a multiple-ply form with matching variable indicia on each ply, has been properly assembled. The system operates in conjunction with a conventional pin band collator and comprises a plurality of indicia sensing devices, such as bar code scanners and/or video cameras, located at the collator stations for sensing the variable indicia on each part of the product during assembly. Advantages of the system include the ability to use either bar code scanners or video cameras as indicia sensing devices, provision for automatic resequencing of the printers used for printing the variable indicia in the event of a mismatch error, automatic indication of the collator station where a mismatch error has occurred, and automatic marking of defective products that are produced after an error occurs.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1995Date of Patent: March 4, 1997Assignee: Wallace Computer Services, Inc.Inventors: Joseph W. Patent number: 5595955Abstract: A pressure and heat-sensitive composition comprising chromogen-containing pressure-rupturable microcapsules and heat-sensitive color developer useful for verification of document authenticity system when applied as a localized coating on documents, such as checks and prescriptions. Quickly striking the chromogenic composition with a fingernail or blunt object to generate pressure and heat in the coating produces a colored image by friction. The chromogenic composition possesses a fugitive characteristic, whereby the colored image gradually disappears and can be made to reappear when the chromogenic coating is again subjected to external pressure and heat. This feature can be used for repeated verification of the authenticity of the document.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1994Date of Patent: January 21, 1997Assignee: Wallace Computer Services, Inc.Inventors: John C. Patent number: 5591290Abstract: The adhesive bonding strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive on a laminate is selectively modified by applying a discontinuous layer of a non-adhesive material to the pressure sensitive adhesive. Preferably, the laminate is a preformed, label stock, including a label or substrate having a pressure sensitive adhesive on one surface thereof and a release sheet overlying the adhesive. The label is first delaminated from the release sheet to expose the oppositely facing surface of the label and the release sheet. A discontinuous layer of the non-adhesive material is then printed on either the release sheet or the adhesive. The release sheet is relaminated back onto the label to form a modified laminate with new adhesive properties. When the label is then separated from the release layer, the non-adhesive material adheres to the pressure sensitive adhesive to reduce the exposed surface area of the adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1995Date of Patent: January 7, 1997Assignee: Wallace Computer Services, Inc.Inventors: Peter A. Patent number: 5587222Abstract: A label assembly includes a label with a removable multi-ply insert attached thereto by at least one fastening strip. The label has an adhesive applied to one of its sides for attaching the label assembly to an article. In two embodiments, the label assembly has a pair of perforated fastening strips for removably coupling the multi-ply insert to the label, while the label remains attached to the article. In another embodiment, one edge of the top ply of the insert is secured to the label by a single fastening strip, while the other edge of the top ply of the insert extends outwardly from the remaining plies of the insert and is secured directly to the label. In yet another embodiment, a single large fastening strip overlies substantially the entire top ply of the insert, and extends outwardly from three of the peripheral edges of the insert to engage the label for peelably securing the insert to the label by a pressure-sensitive adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1994Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: Wallace Computer Services, Inc.Inventor: Donald J. Patent number: 5570291Abstract: A system and method for generating estimates and orders for the manufacture of custom items such as business forms is provided which stores estimate data at a central location, e.g., a corporate office, for access by sales representatives at remote sales sites. A sales representative creates an item specification for a form to be manufactured and electronically transmits it to the corporate office for estimate data. Data relating to the cost and list price to produce the form based on the item specification is transmitted to the sales representative. The sales representative determines a sell price from the pricing data, and generates a production order using the item specification and the estimate data, among other data. The production order is transmitted to a manufacturing plant for job execution.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1994Date of Patent: October 29, 1996Assignee: Wallace Computer Services, Inc.Inventors: James Dudle, Michael Leatherman, Michael Morrison, Waldo Schnell
