A second embodiment employs a combination of a manual hand crank drive along with electric motor drive. In third and fourth embodiments described herein, the operator is set up normally for manual drive but is readily adapted by replacement of the manual cover plate to electric motor drive.

    Abstract: The skylight may be of the domed-type or flat-type and of single or double glass (acrylic or other transparent or translucent plastic) construction. The skylight fits within an opening in a roof or the like and has a peripheral base that may be constructed of a metal material such as aluminum, and which is fixed to the roof about the opening. The base comprises inner and outer base frames separated by a thermal break, a peripheral curb frame disposed over the base, and a retainer for securing the skylight cover over the curb frame. The curb frame or support frame has inner and outer sections connected by a heat insulating thermal barrier. The curb frame is constructed by welding at the corners of the support frame but eliminating the welding in the area of the thermal barrier thus alleviating a caulking operation at the top and the bottom of the curb frame.

    Abstract: A skylight structure having a condensate removal system and constructed employing rafters and purlins in interconnecting relationship. The rafters have side condensation gutters formed by an upright wall upon which ends of adjacent purlins rest. The purlins rest upon the upright wall of the rafter. Adjacent purlins are secured by means of a purlin locating clip secured to the center support of the rafter and having side extending wings each engaging in a respective purlin groove.

The skylight fits within an opening in a roof or the like and has a peripheral curb of an extruded rigid thermoplastic, such as polyvinylchloride (PVC), which is fixed to the roof construction about the opening. The rigid thermoplastic curb has a top co-extruded flexible thermoplastic (such as PVC) gasket integral with the curb and compressible against the edge of the glass or plastic dome or panel. There is also provided a second flexible integral co-extruded thermoplastic gasket adapted to contact a retainer secured to the curb for retaining the dome or panel on the curb. The rigid curb is of a thermoplastic in the shore "D" durometer hardness scale, while the flexible gaskets are of a thermoplastic in the shore "A" durometer hardness scale.

    Abstract: A skylight that may have a domed-type or flat-type glazing and which is adapted to fit within the opening of a roof or the like having a peripheral frame which is fixed to the roof about the opening. The frame is constructed including a base frame and an operating leaf frame usually referred to as an operating leaf frame or operating leaf. A retainer is used for securing the skylight cover over the operating leaf frame. The frame comprises a rigid plastic profile (core) having high temperature resistant properties and a plastic capping material extruded over the external exposed surface of the core to protect the profile from weathering. There is also preferably provided with the profile and capping, a flexible gasket means which may include respective gaskets associated with both the base frame and the operating leaf frame.

The curb member or frame at its top receives a flexible thermoplastic (such as PVC) gasket compressible against the edge of the glass or plastic dome or panel. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention the frame may be constructed of a material such as PVC, in which case the top gasket may be integral with the frame or curb. In this case there may also be a second flexible thermosplastic gasket adapted to contact a retainer secured to the curb for retaining the dome or panel on the curb.

    Abstract: A safety vent preferably for use in a high rise building for permitting the escape of smoke and fumes and comprising a fixed frame accommodated by an opening in the building, a movable frame pivotally secured to the fixed frame and means for biasing the movable frame to an open position. In the preferred embodiment the movable frame includes panel means and pivots at its lower end. A latch mechanism maintains the movable frame in a closed position while a release mechanism, operated either electrically or pneumatically, can be energized to permit opening of the vent. Limiting means in the form of shock absorbers or snubbers interconnect between frames for limiting the open position of the vent.

    Abstract: An energy efficient skylight construction. A skylight cover is secured by a frame to a curbing comprised of an insulating core, the interior and exterior surfaces of which are covered by non-combustible shields separated along the upper and lower surfaces of the curbing by a gap which serves as a "thermal break" between the highly conductive inner and outer shields. The frame is pierced by drain openings the exterior of which are covered by a filter type material such as foam or glass fibers that is both absorbtive of moisture and resistant to the passage of air. The frame is secured to the outward portion of the curbing and includes a flange extending inward across the gap between the shields, which serves as a gutter to collect condensation which drips off the glazing.

    Abstract: A system for venting smoke and fumes from selected floors of a multi-story building comprising a vertical smoke pipe or shaft which extends from the basement to the roof of the building and a plurality of vent units disposed along the smoke shaft, one being associated with each floor of the building. Each unit includes a hinged door that opens by gravity force and is normally maintained closed by a latch mechanism that may be operated remotely by electrical or pneumatic means or may be operated manually. A thin metallic gasket seals the door to its frame and further functions as a spring means for urging the door open when the latch mechanism is released.
