  • Patent number: 10896122
Abstract: The disclosure relates to testing software for operating an autonomous vehicle. For instance, a first simulation may be run using log data and the software to control a first simulated vehicle. During this, one or more characteristics of the simulated vehicle may be compared with one or more characteristics of a vehicle from the log data. The comparison may be used to determine a divergence point for starting a timer. In addition, a second simulation may be run using the log data and the software to control a second simulated vehicle. The divergence point may be used to determine a handover time to allow the software to take control of the second simulated vehicle. Whether the software is able to continue through the first simulation before the timer expires without a particular type of event occurring and/or the second simulation without the particular type of event occurring is determined.

  • Patent number: 10891850
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to reducing replacing a desiccant cartridge based upon a condensation risk. In one example, first information corresponding to a current dew point within a sensor housing of a sensor and second information identifying temperature data corresponding to a predefined area where the sensor is projected to travel may be received. Based upon the first and second information a condensation risk corresponding to the likelihood of condensation forming within the sensor housing in the event it traveled within the predefined area based upon the current dew point and the temperature data may be determined. Based upon the determined condensation risk, an indication that a desiccant cartridge within the sensor housing should be replaced to reduce the current dew point and the condensation risk may be provided.

  • Patent number: 10891757
Abstract: The technology relates to determining whether a camera is occluded. For instance, an image may be captured using a camera having red, green, and blue pixels each including a photosensor. Output values for the photosensors of each of the red pixels, green pixels, and blue pixels may be determined for the images. The output values of the green pixels may be compared to one or more of the output values of the red pixels or the output values of the blue pixels. That the camera is occluded is determined based on the comparison.

  • Patent number: 10890919
Abstract: Examples relating to vehicle velocity calculation using radar technology are described. An example method performed by a computing system may involve, while a vehicle is moving on a road, receiving, from two or more radar sensors mounted at different locations on the vehicle, radar data representative of an environment of the vehicle. The method may involve, based on the data, detecting at least one scatterer in the environment. The method may involve making a determination of a likelihood that the at least one scatterer is stationary with respect to the vehicle. The method may involve, based on the determination being that the likelihood is at least equal to a predefined confidence threshold, calculating a velocity of the vehicle based on the data from the sensors. The calculated velocity may include an angular and linear velocity. Further, the method may involve controlling the vehicle based on the calculated velocity.

  • Patent number: 10883844
Abstract: Systems, methods, devices, and other techniques for planning a trajectory of a vehicle. A computing system can implement a trajectory planning neural network configured to, at each time step of multiple time steps: obtain a first neural network input and a second neural network input. The first neural network input can characterize a set of waypoints indicated by the waypoint data, and the second neural network input can characterize (a) environmental data that represents a current state of an environment of the vehicle and (b) navigation data that represents a planned navigation route for the vehicle. The trajectory planning neural network may process the first neural network input and the second neural network input to generate a set of output scores, where each output score in the set of output scores corresponds to a different location of a set of possible locations in a vicinity of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 10877480
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a vehicle having one or more computing devices that may receive instructions to pick up a passenger at a location, determine when the vehicle is within a first distance of the location, provide a first notification that the vehicle is within the first distance, and stop the vehicle. When the vehicle is stopped, the computing device may initiate a countdown. When a client computing device associated with the passenger has not been authenticated, the computing devices may provide a second notification based on a first amount of time remaining in the countdown and a third notification indicating that the trip is cancelled based on a second amount of time remaining in the countdown less than the first amount of time. Once the third notification is provided, the computing devices move the vehicle from the where the vehicle is stopped without the passenger.

  • Patent number: 10872143
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide systems and methods for recognizing an assigned passenger. For instance, dispatching instructions to pick up a passenger at a pickup location are received. The instructions include authentication information for authenticating a client computing device associated with the passenger. A vehicle is maneuvered in an autonomous driving mode towards the pickup location. The client device is then authenticated. After authentication, a set of pedestrians within a predetermined distance of the vehicle are identified from sensor information generated by a sensor of the vehicle and location information is received over a period of time from the client device. The received location information is used to estimate a velocity of the passenger. This estimated velocity is used to identify a subset of set of pedestrians that is likely to be the passenger. The vehicle is stopped to allow the passenger to enter the vehicle based on the subset.

  • Patent number: 10871779
Abstract: A system and method include scanning a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) device through a range of orientations corresponding to a scanning zone while emitting light pulses from the LIDAR device. The method also includes receiving returning light pulses corresponding to the light pulses emitted from the LIDAR device and determining initial point cloud data based on time delays between emitting the light pulses and receiving the corresponding returning light pulses and the orientations of the LIDAR device. The initial point cloud data has an initial angular resolution. The method includes identifying, based on the initial point cloud data, a reflective feature in the scanning zone and determining an enhancement region and an enhanced angular resolution for a subsequent scan to provide a higher spatial resolution in at least a portion of subsequent point cloud data from the subsequent scan corresponding to the reflective feature.
