Abstract: An apparatus and method for gripping containers, each having a circumference, for dumping material in a material collection vehicle including more than one gripping mechanisms, wherein each of the gripping mechanisms can engage a container around at least one-half of the circumference of the container. In one embodiment, the gripping mechanism is attached to a base member and includes an outer gripping member pivotally attached to the base member and an inner gripping member pivotally attached to the base member and an actuating mechanism for moving at least one gripping member toward the other gripping member.

Abstract: A fluid system for plural motor driven pumps is disclosed. The fluid system includes a hydraulic motor, a fluid reservoir, and a plurality of fixed displacement pumps. A control valve selectively directs flow of fluid to either a reservoir or the hydraulic motor. A control system responsive to an external condition and an internal condition generates a signal for each condition. The control valve is operated by the signals. The internal signal may be generated by an internal pressure monitoring device.

The tailgate apparatus includes a receiving hopper and a movable panel which in a compaction position provides a rear closure for the storage body. The moveable panel is pivotally mounted to a pair of side panels which are pivotable upon the rear end of the sides of the tailgate. The movable panel may be swept rearwardly while the side panels are pivotable to a high position and then after the side panels are lowered, the moveable panel is pivoted forwardly to sweep through the hopper and compact the swept articles into the opening of the storage body. The entire tailgate may be opened by operation of a cylinder and link mechanism mounted between the top of the storage body and the rear face of the tailgate.

Abstract: A container adapted to receive refuse materials is pivotally mounted at the lower front end thereof to a truck body. The rear end of the refuse container is made adjustable in vertical height by means of a pair of hydraulic cylinders for pivoting the container about its front pivotal axis. A hydraulically controlled platen blade or ram is disposed within the refuse container for compacting materials disposed within the container, or alternatively pushing materials within the container out of the rear end of the container, when the rear end of the container is open. A door is slideably disposed upon the rear end of the container and this door is also controlled hydraulically by a pair of hydraulic cylinders. The door is vertically adjustable to any degree of opening and may be controlled simultaneously with the control of the platen blade so as to be able to meter the flow of materials out of the rear of the container when unloading.
