Patent number: 7958256Abstract: Internet protocol (IP) data service providers may provide several services over a single communications channel and/or circuit. For example, the provider may deliver public services such as Wi-Fi, content, gaming, etc. as well as business-critical “back-office” services such as credit card processing, VoIP, streaming video, video conferencing, etc. Some applications can very demanding from a quality of service standpoint, whereas other applications are unwanted or unauthorized on the network such as worms, viruses, denial of service attacks and/or certain types of peer-to-peer file sharing applications. Applications sharing the communication channel may be classified into one or more application classifications. The available bandwidth over the communications channel and/or circuit may then be managed via a prioritization system that can be parameterized based on the available bandwidth and/or the desired application behavior for given characterized applications.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2008Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: Wayport, Inc.Inventor: James D. Patent number: 7856659Abstract: A system and method for providing network access are disclosed. After connecting to a network at an access point, a user of a computing device registers for network access with a network provider. In response to the registration, the network provider sends a completion page to the computing device. The completion page includes a link to an embedded file such as a small, transparent GIF image. When the computing device retrieves the embedded file, the embedded file is associated with a header than includes an instruction to generate a network system identifier (e.g., a cookie). The network system identifier may be stored by the computing device and later used to identify the computing device as a registrant for network access with the network provider. The embedded file may also be sent at other times, such as after authentication of the user for network access.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2003Date of Patent: December 21, 2010Assignee: Wayport, Inc.Inventors: James D. Patent number: 7428413Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention is directed to an authorization and access control system for a venue or a geographic region comprising a plurality of venues. The authorization and access control system provides one or more computing devices selective access to one or more networks and/or services available in a network communications system by distributing a substantially unique string of characters (an “access code”) to each user of a computing device. The access code can then be entered via an input device, such as a keyboard or its equivalent, of the computing device. This enables the computing device to gain access to one or more networks and/or services at a venue or in geographic region with the network communications system. Various embodiments are useful and may have several advantages in several venues, such as coffee shops, hotels, train stations, law offices, marinas, truck stops, fueling stations, restaurants, and stores, among others.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2004Date of Patent: September 23, 2008Assignee: Wayport, Inc.Inventor: Ian M. Publication number: 20080065774Abstract: A method, system and computer program product for providing location-specific content to a personal computing device (PCD) connected to a distributed server network (such as the Internet) without requiring an access control gateway to provide such content. Location-specific (and user-specific) content/services are provided by a client-server architecture utilizing a location database and a location look-up utility of a location identifier and content retrieval (LICR) server. Specifically, a utility executing on the PCD provides PCD location parameters to the LICR server, which is equipped with a location look up engine/functionality and a location content retrieval engine/functionality (both within a LICR utility) that responds by providing location-specific and user-specific content to the PCD.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 12, 2007Publication date: March 13, 2008Applicant: Wayport, Inc.Inventor: James D. Publication number: 20080040424Abstract: A web server in a server network with a centralized administrative and/or content (CAC) server executes a modified “404: Not Found” Handler. When a requested file is present within the web server's temporary storage, the file is retrieved from the temporary directory and provided in response to the request from the requesting client (browser). Also, the web server automatically initiates retrieval of a more current copy of the file from the CAC server. However, when the requested file is not present within the server's temporary directory, the modified handler checks whether the requested file is available for download from the CAC server and retrieves the requested file from the CAC server, rather than issuing the standard 404: Not Found error response. The 404: Not Found error response is only issued when the requested file is not available at both the temporary directory and the CAC server.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2007Publication date: February 14, 2008Applicant: Wayport, Inc.Inventor: ALAN C. Publication number: 20080040425Abstract: A web server utility executes on a server and provides the following functions: determining when a web page profile also includes an assignment of additional content; dynamically retrieving the additional content; and generating the web page with the additional content either appended to, prepended to, or wholly replacing one or more sections of the baseline content. When the utility detects assignment of additional content, the utility checks a specific location within the filesystem for the additional content. When the additional content is not found at the specific location, the utility automatically checks the temporary directory (for static content) then the centralized administrative and/or content (CAC) server for the additional content. When the additional content is dynamic, the CAC server retrieves and executes the file at the CAC server to generate the dynamic content, which is transmitted back to the web server for rendering within or as the whole-page output.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2007Publication date: February 14, 2008Applicant: Wayport, Inc.Inventor: ALAN HINES
