  • Patent number: 4355526
Abstract: A method and apparatus for uncoiling material such as wire, from a coil supported about a horizontal axis by a drum, including separating a loop from the coil, and bending the leading end of the material upon its exit from a pinch roll unit so that it takes a path generally parallel to that of a predetermined passline, and straightening the material once the leading end passes through the straightener roll area. An end bender roll and two of the straightener rolls are mounted on a pivotal frame connected to a piston cylinder assembly which causes the frame to be rotated through an arc in a direction to either bring the end bender roll into an operative position while the two straightener rolls are in an inoperative position, or to bring the end bender roll into an inoperative position while the two straightener rolls assume a nested relationship with a fourth roll in an operative position.

  • Patent number: 4329864
Abstract: Disclosed is a vertical stand of a sizing mill for rolling seamless tube in which each roll of the mill is contained in and supported by a yoke moveable both transversely of the product passline and axially of the roll axis, the latter adjustment being performed by an elevator arranged normally at the bottom of the mill for moving both yokes as a unit with their rolls, i.e. a yoke-roll set, through the top of the stand to a roll changing position where both yokes are transferred as a unit to one of two in-lined arranged side shifting carriages supported by the stand, the arrangement being such that when a used yoke-roll set is moved away from the stand at the top thereof by one of the carriages a replacement yoke-roll set is positioned above the stand of the other carriage in readiness to be received and lowered into the stand by the elevator.

  • Patent number: 4321452
Abstract: Method and apparatus for detecting whether or not the gap in adjoining ends of a ring-like workpiece to be flash welded is of normal size, or is so much larger as to produce an unsatisfactory weld. The invention provides means whereby the amount the movable platen of a flash welder moves in a direction toward the stationary platen is compared with its position when the ends abut and flashing begins. If the ends are not materially beyond a predetermined normal gap, the welding action proceeds; however, if the ends are spaced beyond such normal gap, further action of the flash welding process is aborted, or a signal is activated; or both abortion and signal are provided. The invention is especially adapted for use in welding rings which are formed and welded in high production, such as rings that are further processed to make rims for tires of a vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4280671
Abstract: A reel with an expandable mandrel support device for coiling material such as flat rolled steel strip or strips, the reel mandrel having a gripper mechanism for effectively securing each leading end to the reel mandrel which mechanism has numerous cam action gripper bars that singularly can increase gripping force as the tension in the strip strands clamped by one or more cams is developed by the reel; a positioning wedge assembly for these gripper bars constructed to first position and hold immovable, in an operative position, except for movement due to tension buildup, and secondly to positively and quickly release all gripper bars from the strand ends and hence from the reel mandrel when the coils formed by the reel mandrel are to be removed.

  • Patent number: 4275578
Abstract: A method and apparatus in a hot multi-stand tube mill for producing a thin metallic tube having end portions which corresponds to the wall thickness and diameter of the rest of the rolled tube or alternately, tapered ends. Each stand is provided with a set of three cooperating rolls arranged to form a roll pass opening. According to the tube's positioning in the mill, an appropriate additional adjustment of the rolls to decrease or enlarge the roll pass diameter is made in one or all of the last three stands. Both an initial roll setting varying means and an additional roll setting varying means cause movement of wedges abutting the roll chocks thereby causing movement of the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4242895
Abstract: This disclosure relates in part to a hot extrusion press wherein the extrusion is cooled immediately after the extrusion operation by arranging a cooling tube including a cooling nozzle within the platen of the press and a second cooling nozzle between the platen and a water tank to which the extrusion is ultimately transferred for final cooling. The second cooling nozzle is employed to cool the extrusion and on the occasion of a cobbled extrusion, it is employed to drain the cooling tube and at the same time prevents water from flowing from the tank into the tube.

  • Patent number: 4242894
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a thin metallic tube having a trailing end portion which optionally can be formed with an external diameter substantially corresponding to or varying from that of the remaining rolled portion of the tube rolled in a three roller skewed rolling mill. This is accomplished by causing an angular unisonal displacement of the roller axes to effect an enlargement of the rolling area, and at least during part of the roller movement, a second movement of the roller perpendicular to the axis of the tube.

  • Patent number: 4216348
Abstract: A roof assembly for an electric arc furnace formed by a series of water cooled panels supportingly arranged between the water conveying outer ring and a water conveying center ring encircling the electrode-refractory area. One or more of these panels are constructed of a copper face sheet brazed to a steel backing sheet having groups of several machined traverse passageways, and are located in critical areas in the roof. Communicating with each group of passageways is a water entry header and a water discharge header. The outer ring acts as both a water source and drainage for the panels and center ring. The panels are suspended from a self-supporting spider web structure which carries the center ring and is supported by the outer ring.

  • Patent number: 4204413
Abstract: The disclosure pertains to a drive shaft for machines such as roller levellers for processing steel strip. The shaft is made up of outer and inner members, the latter driving the former. Between the members is provided a frictional driving surface such as can be provided by brake lining. The inner member has an opening into which is introduced a pressure medium such as solution of soluble oil which in a controllable and predictable manner expands the inner member thereby allowing the establishment of a driving relationship between the members up to a given torque and on the experience of excessive and objectionable torques allowing relative movement between the members.

  • Patent number: 4154081
Abstract: This disclosure pertains to a method and device for changing a die ring to and from a die in an indirect extrusion press. Once the die-die ring assembly is exposed from the container of the press, the changing device consisting of a rotating arm having opposed relatively movable jaws is caused to engage the die ring and remove it from the extrusion axis of the press, and after treatment, if necessary, to return it to the extrusion axis and place it on the die.In the operation of indirect extrusion presses it has been the normal practice to employ a composite die assembly consisting of a die and outer encircling die ring. After completion of the extrusion operation the die ring is removed from the back of the container and either the same die ring or a second one is placed back on the die after the die or the container has been moved to position the die at the front of the container.
