  • Patent number: 10557963
Abstract: Techniques and apparatus are provided for downhole sensing using optical couplers in a downhole splitter assembly to split interrogating light signals into multiple optical sensing branches. Each optical branch may then be coupled to an optical sensor (e.g., a pass-through or an optical single-ended transducer (OSET)) or to another optical coupler for additional branching. The sensors may be pressure/temperature (P/T) type transducers. Some systems may exclusively use OSETs as the optical sensors. In this manner, if one of the OSETs is damaged, it does not affect light traveling to any of the other sensors, and sensing information from remaining sensors is still returned.

  • Patent number: 10546159
Abstract: A system and method handles one or more pumping units in an out-of-balance condition. Sensing equipment monitors operating parameters related to balance of each of the one or more pumping units. Processing equipment determines the out-of-balance condition in at least one of the one or more pumping units based on the monitored operating parameters. A first correction to a counterbalance parameter of the at least one pumping unit can be calculated, such as a new position or weight of the counterbalance, so the out-of-balance condition can be corrected by implementing the new position or weight at the at least one pumping unit. A second correction to a stroke parameter of the at least one pumping unit can be calculated, such as a new stroke rate or pattern, so operation of the pumping unit can be maintained despite the out-of-balance condition.

  • Patent number: 10544647
Abstract: An inflatable packer assembly can include an inflatable seal element having an internal inflation chamber, a flow passage extending longitudinally through the inflatable packer assembly, a flow restrictor between sections of the flow passage, and a flow controller that selectively permits and prevents fluid communication between the inflation chamber and each of the flow passage sections. The flow controller changes from a deflate configuration to an inflate configuration in response to an increase in flow rate through the flow passage. A method can include connecting an inflatable packer assembly in a tubular string, so that a longitudinal flow passage of the tubular string extends through the inflatable packer assembly, and a flow restrictor restricts flow between sections of the flow passage, and inflating an inflatable seal element of the inflatable packer assembly while fluid flows between the flow passage sections via the flow restrictor.

  • Patent number: 10539518
Abstract: Using an X-ray diffractometer, a processing device, and memory, a database models estimates of a number of cycles to failure for each of a plurality of materials. The model estimates are performed on the material at a plurality of applied fatigues up to a failure point and are based on parameters including residual stress, the micro-strain, and the ratio between X-Ray peak intensity and background intensity of the component material. To inspect a component, the material of the component is selected in the database, and measurements are obtained at two or more different depths of at least a portion of the component. Information about current residual stress, micro-strain, and ratio between X-Ray peak intensity and background intensity are determined from the obtained measurements. Then, a fatigue life of the portion of the component is estimated by matching the information to at least one of the modelled estimates of the number of cycles to failure in the database for the selected material.

  • Patent number: 10494877
Abstract: A riser apparatus includes a riser section and a flow control device. The riser section is disposed on a riser. The flow control device's body installs in the riser section. The assembly may install between uphole and downhole side ports, which may be interconnected by bypass piping and an intermediate device, such as a pump. At least one annular seal rotatably supported by bearings in the body's inner bore can engage a tubular passing therethrough and can seal an annulus therebetween. In one example, pressure uphole of the annular seal may be kept greater than downhole pressure. A debris barrier disposed on the uphole end of the body covers an annular area from an outer perimeter at the exterior of the body toward a central opening at the inner bore. The debris barrier prevents debris, such as drilling cuttings, uphole of the debris barrier from entering into the body's inner bore.
