Patent number: 11073010Abstract: A downhole valve assembly comprises a sleeve concentric with a housing and movable relative to a port through the housing to control flow of fluid through the port. A sensor assembly provides indicates the relative positions of the sleeve and housing, and comprises first and second sensors on e.g. the housing which detect markers on e.g. the sleeve. The sensor outputs are produced by processing (e.g. combining, integrating, summing, subtracting or otherwise processing) the signal components of each of the first and second sensors to correct for misalignment of the sleeve with the housing. The sensor output provides position information for more than one plane, and the output signal therefore allows for correction of errors in the position information arising from misalignment of the sleeve with the housing.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2018Date of Patent: July 27, 2021Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventor: Matthew David Knight

Patent number: 11060379Abstract: A casing scraper can include extendable scraper elements, and an actuator that extends the scraper elements after the actuator retracts the scraper elements. The actuator extends the scraper elements and retracts the scraper elements after application of respective pressure differentials in a well. A method of operating a casing scraper can include extending scraper elements into contact with an interior surface of a casing after a predetermined pressure differential is applied without obstructing an interior flow passage, and then retracting the scraper elements after another predetermined pressure differential is applied. A well system can include a casing scraper with one or more extendable scraper elements, and an actuator that operates in response to manipulation of pressure differentials. The actuator operates the casing scraper only after at least a predetermined pressure differential has been applied for at least a predetermined period of time.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2017Date of Patent: July 13, 2021Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventor: Matthew D. Patent number: 11060383Abstract: An apparatus deploys and retrieves a wear bushing in a wellhead during the same trip, such as when using a bottom hole assembly for drilling. Arms in the form of pistons, levers, dogs, etc. can be moved between retracted and extended conditions on the apparatus using actuations from remote communications. When extended, the arms engage inside the wear bushing or inside an adapter disposed in the bushing. When retracted, the arms lie within the exterior of the tool to avoid wear and damage when the drillstring is used for drilling or other operations. During deployment, the bushing supported on the extended arms is seated in the wellhead. The arms are then retracted through remote activation, and the bottom hole assembly is run further downhole. During retrieval, the retracted arms are extended through remote activation and engage in the bushing so the drillstring can lift the bushing from the wellhead.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2020Date of Patent: July 13, 2021Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventors: Eric M. Twardowski, Eduardo G Valverde

Patent number: 11048015Abstract: Methods, tools, and systems for determining porosity in an earth formation are disclosed. Neutrons are emitted into the formation to induce inelastic scattering gamma rays and thermal capture gamma rays in the formation. The induced gamma rays are detected at a proximal gamma detector and a far gamma detector, which are spaced at different axial distances from the neutron source. A measured proximal-to-far inelastic ratio (a ratio of inelastic scattering gammas detected at the proximal and far detector) and a proximal-to-far thermal capture ratio (a ratio of thermal capture gammas detected at the proximal and far detector) are determined and used to calculate the formation porosity. Techniques are disclosed for removing borehole and casing configuration effects from the measured proximal-to-far thermal capture ratio, leaving only porosity dependence.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2019Date of Patent: June 29, 2021Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventors: Gregory Schmid, Richard Pemper, Darrell Dolliver

Patent number: 11047224Abstract: A system and method are used in drilling a borehole in a formation. A trip to move a drillstring in the borehole is identified, where the trip is expected to produce a piston effect that changes a downhole pressure of the fluid in the borehole. A peak speed to move the drillstring in the borehole is calculated for the trip, and adjustments to a surface backpressure of the drilling system is calculated for the trip at the calculated peak speed to keep the downhole pressure within a tolerance of the formation. The drillstring is moved in the trip according to the calculated peak speed, and the downhole pressure change produced by the piston effect is counteracted by automatically adjusting the surface backpressure according to the calculated adjustments.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2019Date of Patent: June 29, 2021Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventors: Sayamik N. Patent number: 11035338Abstract: A progressing cavity device operates as a motor to impart torque to a bit. A stator of the device defines an internal profile having uphole stages with a first dimension being less than a second dimension of downhole stage. A rotor has an external profile with a constant outer dimension along its length. Disposed in the stator, the rotor defines cavities with the stator and is rotatable with pumped fluid progressing in the cavities from the uphole to downhole to transfer torque to the drive toward the downhole end. Although the rotor is subjected at the downhole end to a reactive torque from the bit, the interference fit of the rotor's constant dimension with the stator's downhole stages is less than with the uphole stages, which can mitigate issues with heat buildup in the downhole stages. The device can also operates as a progressing cavity pump.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2017Date of Patent: June 15, 2021Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventors: Harjinder Singh Parhar, Travis Lee Chometsky, Michael W. Patent number: 11021930Abstract: A diverter tool reduces surge pressure when running casing into a wellbore. The tool is kept open while running the casing so surge pressure can pass out a bypass port. The tool is then closed with a ball that lands in a seat disposed in an interposed condition in a sleeve of the tool's housing. Fluid pressure applied against the seat in the interposed condition engaged with the ball overcomes a first fixture temporarily holding the sleeve open. The fluid pressure shifts the freed sleeve closed. Additional fluid pressure applied against the seat with the captured ball then overcomes a second fixture temporarily holding the seat in the sleeve. Once freed, the seat with the captured ball pivots from the interposed condition to a stowed condition to expose the internal bore of the sleeve to the longitudinal bore of the tool so additional cementing operations can be performed.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2019Date of Patent: June 1, 2021Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventors: Marcel Budde, Mark Baas, George E.
