  • Patent number: 7560662
Abstract: An apparatus and/or process for applying a weld overlay to a nozzle or piping spool of complex configuration is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, the welding apparatus comprises a mounting assembly having a plurality of magnetic foot pads, a tension support rod attached at one end to one of the magnetic foot pads, an upper attachment pad at the opposite end of the rod, and a bottom attachment pad attached to at least one other magnetic foot pad; a travel guide, the travel guide attached to the upper attachment pad at one end and the bottom attachment pad at the other end; and a head assembly attached to the travel guide, the head assembly having: i) a track ring assembly having an inner ring and an outer ring, ii.) at least two opposed weld heads attached to the inner track ring, iii.) at least one movable wire feed drive mechanism on the track ring, and iv.

  • Patent number: 6013890
Abstract: A method is disclosed for applying a weld overlay to a tube. Using a first weld head, a bead of overlay material is applied onto a tube by melting the overlay material. In the process of applying the weld bead to the tube, a heat affected zone is created within the tube. Thereafter, a second weld head is employed to apply sufficient heat to the exterior of the tube to raise the temperature within the heat-affected zone to a temperature higher than its tempering temperature but lower than its Ae1 temperature. In this manner the heat affected zone is eliminated without creating a new heat affected zone in the process. In the disclosed embodiment, the tube is rotated with respect to the weld heads, while the weld heads move along the longitudinal axis of the tube. According to the disclosed embodiment, the first weld head employs a gas-metal arc welding process, and the second weld head employs a gas-tungsten arc welding process.

  • Patent number: 4841123
Abstract: An automated welding device for applying a weld overlay to a preexisting weld at the saddle-shaped juncture between a horizontal header pipe and a vertical riser pipe includes a track mountable to the header and adapted to receive a carriage for orbital movement thereon. The carriage is self-propelled and includes a guide means for engaging a flat surface of the track to maintain the carriage in the desired orientation. A welding torch can be mounted to the carriage for movement toward and away from the surface of the pipe and for movement back and forth across the width of the preexisting weld. The track can be oriented to permit the welding torch to follow a predetermined path in more than one orthogonal plane.

  • Patent number: 4716271
Abstract: An apparatus for circumferentially and longitudinally positioning a weld head or other tool with respect to the surface of a pipe. A first annular ring is affixed to the pipe. A longitudinally movable annular indexing track is also circumferentially fitted about the pipe and rides upon a plurality of support rods mounted to the indexing track. The support rods are slidably received within corresponding holes in the clamping ring and extend longitudinally and parallel to the outer surface of the pipe. A motor mounted to the fixed ring drives a ring gear concentric to the fixed ring to reciprocate a ball screw which moves the second longitudinally moveable ring toward and away from the fixed ring. An orbitally moveable third annular ring is circumferentially mounted to the second ring, and a second motor mounted to the fixed ring drives a telescoping drive shaft which rotates the orbital third ring.
