Abstract: A filter device for a screw extruder for the handling of molten plastic comprising a filter housing having inlet and outlet bores and a slide displaceable in the housing transverse to the direction of the flow of the melt. At least one recess in the slide forms a portion of a melt channel and receives a screen member. In order to obtain uniform distribution of the flow of melt in the filter device and of the pressure forces acting on the filter surface, the recess is formed by an annular milling which is surrounded by a replaceable cylindrical screen member. A flow passage in the slide extends from the melt channel to the outlet bore.

  • Patent number: 4570359
Abstract: Apparatus for dewatering and drying plastic granulate comprising a multistage dewatering rotor having conveyor and aerating blades and surrounded by a screening member located within a housing between a product inlet and a product outlet. In order to simplify the handling of a wide variety of plastic granulate with only a small amount of space being required, a collection container which is open at its top coaxially surrounds the first stage of the dewatering rotor and accumulates separated water in a reservoir region for discharge by a suction pump. The product inlet discharges into a feed vessel secured in the collection container. The first stage of the dewatering rotor is provided on its circumference with worm segments of increasing pitch in the direction of granulate conveyance.

  • Patent number: 4569686
Abstract: Apparatus for washing paint mist from exhaust air from a spray-painting operation draws the exhaust air, paint mist, and a washing liquid down a funnel inlet into an open ended cylindrical mixing chamber. In the mixing chamber, they turbulently spiral outwardly to exit said chamber through the open ends thereof. An elongated blocking structure is centrally disposed in said mixing chamber to block access of exhaust air to the central portion of the mixing chamber which has low spiral turbulence and thus low mixing efficiency. The inlet to the mixing chamber and the open end outlets therefrom preferably form venturies to further increase the mixing efficiency.

  • Patent number: 4544341
Abstract: A wear-protected workpiece of metal, particularly a perforated granulation plate for plastic extruders, comprising shaped members of wear-resistant material inserted in recesses in the work surface of the workpiece, the spaces between the walls of the recesses and the shaped pieces being filled with a binder. In order to minimize the expenses of manufacture and repair of the wear-protected workpiece and make it possible to use non-metallic wear-resistant material for the insert member, the recesses and the shaped members have walls which widen at least in two opposed regions, the largest dimension of the widened wall of the shaped member being equal to or smaller than the dimension of the opening of the corresponding recess so that the insert member is freely inserted into the recess and forms a space therewith in which a binder can be filled to form a locking means for the insert member in the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4468256
Abstract: A process for the hydrolysis of cellulose from vegetable raw materials to glucose, particularly using wood as the raw material, comprises conveying the raw material through a hydrolysis zone in finely comminuted form, the raw material being impregnated with dilute acid and at a sufficiently high hydrolysis temperature. The raw material impregnated with dilute acid is supplied in portions and continuously through the hydrolysis zone where it is heated to a hydrolysis temperature of above 250.degree. C. by means of high pressure steam. This takes place in an extremely short time accompanied by a sudden pressure rise.Apparatus for performing this process comprises a tubular reactor having at least one straight pipe through which can be conveyed an endless piston chain. The pistons of this chain form a leakage gap opposite the inner wall of the pipe and, in each case, two adjacent pistons define a piston chamber. A high pressure steam line is arranged to issue approximately into the center of the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4455091
Abstract: A process for regulating the mixing process of rubber mixtures utilizes an internal or closed mixer having a casing containing two paddles with feed and mixing blades mounted on shafts which extend with parallel axes through a mixing chamber. The shafts are arranged to be driven in opposite directions at variable speeds and the mixer is provided with a pressure-operable plunger for closing the mixing chamber. The temperature of the mixing process is controlled with the aid of a thermometer probe and the mixing sequence is controlled on the basis of energy marks and a superimposed desired/actual value follower control of the mixing temperature via the specific energy supplied to the mixture in the mixing chamber, the speed at which the shafts and hence the paddles are driven and/or the pressure applied by the plunger serving as variables for the temperature control.

  • Patent number: 4437766
Abstract: A mixer comprising a conical mixing vat, tapering downward toward a material egress, and a motor-driven mixing worm which rotates on its axis and revolves within the mixing vat, the mixing worm having an upper region with a small screw pitch and, a lower region with a large pitch and a neutral conveyance zone between the upper and lower regions. In order to achieve a stable pattern of the junction formed by the neutral conveyance zone of the mixing worm between the upper and lower regions, which will be independent of the degree to which the mixer is filled, a mixing worm rotates around another mixing worm which is placed centrally in the upper region of the mixing vat along its longitudinal axis, this worm being of cylindrical shape along its length and extending into the conveyance neutral zone and with its exterior diameter nearly touching the other mixing worm.

  • Patent number: 4395212
Abstract: A screening apparatus for molten plastic material flowing from an extruder comprising a housing mounted on the extruder and having a feed channel for flow of the plastic material therefrom and a slide member mounted for slidable movement in the housing with a clearance therebetween. The slide member contains replaceable screen elements adapted for being positioned in the path of flow of the plastic material flowing from the extruder to effect screening thereof. In order to seal the clearance between the slide member and the housing to prevent outflow of plastic material therefrom, a flange is mounted on the housing to surround the slide member with a gap therebetween. This permits normal free-sliding movement of the slide member in the housing. The flange contains cooling channels to permit flow of a coolant to cool plastic material in the gap and solidify the plastic material to prevent outflow of plastic material from the gap.
