Abstract: Information about coupling of a seismic receiver is obtained from a power spectrum for a record acquired at a seismic receiver. In one method, the power spectrum for the record is compared with a reference power spectrum, which may be known a priori or which may be determined from the power spectra of records acquired by a group of receivers. In an alternative method, one receiver of a group of receivers is designated as a reference receiver, and the power spectra of records acquired by other receivers in the group are compared with a power spectrum for the reference receiver. The obtained information about the coupling of a receiver may be used to determine a coupling correction operator for the receiver, and this operator can be applied to seismic data acquired by the receiver to correct for the effects of imperfect coupling of the receiver.

  • Publication number: 20040230389
Abstract: A method of determining at least one parameter of a waveguide (3) from wavefield data acquired from wave propagation in the waveguide comprises obtaining first and second dispersion curves (9a, 9b, 9c) in the frequency domain from the wavefield data. A frequency interval between the first dispersion curve and the second dispersion curve is found, and this is used in the determination of at least one parameter of the waveguide.

  • Publication number: 20030210609
Abstract: A method of seismic surveying comprising the steps of actuating the or each vibrator in a first vibrator group at time T0, and subsequently actuating the or each vibrator in a second vibrator group at time T1 that satisfies T0<T1<T0+S1+L where S1 is the sweep time of the first vibrator group and L is the listening time. At least one of the first vibrator group and the second vibrator group comprises at least two vibrators. The first group and the second group of vibrators may be the same group, or they may be different groups. This method enables the time required to complete a seismic survey to be reduced compared to the prior art “simultaneous shooting” and “slip-sweep shooting” techniques.

  • Publication number: 20030193837
Abstract: A method of evaluating a seismic survey to be carried out at a particular survey location comprises choosing an initial seismic surveying arrangement. One or more parameters of AVO (amplitude versus offset) uncertainty are then determined from the seismic surveying arrangement using a model of the earth's interior at the survey location. If the parameter(s) of AVO uncertainty are not acceptable the seismic surveying arrangement is changed, and the AVO uncertainty parameter(s) re-determined for the new acquisition geometry.
