Patents Assigned to Westinghouse Air Brake Company
  • Patent number: 6761253
Abstract: A spring applied parking brake assembly for a railway vehicle is provided which automatically activates upon removal of a railway car from the pneumatic braking system of the railway vehicle. The spring applied parking brake assembly comprises a casing which is mounted on or within the braking system, typically alongside the air cylinder. This casing contains a spring member and a piston assembly, both of which are mounted for longitudinal movement within the casing upon the application and/or removal of pneumatic pressure within the casing. The piston assembly includes a piston rod which is associated with the force transfer lever of the braking system such that upon a removal of pneumatic pressure within the casing, longitudinal movement of the piston rod causes this force transfer lever to rotate and apply a force to at least one force transmitting member in the vehicle braking system to initiate a brake application.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for heating gases cooled by an aftercooler that receives hot gases from a compressor. The method includes the steps of directing at least a portion of said hot gases to means for bypassing the aftercooler, and using the bypass means to direct hot gases to a location that receives cooled gases from the aftercooler. The hot gases are used at the location to heat the cooled gases when ambient temperature is at or below freezing, and are used downstream from the aftercooler when moisture freezes in the aftercooler.

Abstract: Gasket for sealing between flanges in a pressurized fluid system. A central opening is disposed within an inner periphery of the gasket, the inner periphery being curved toward the central opening. Fluid pressure on the inner periphery is reacted by hoop tension in the gasket. The outer periphery of the gasket has concave segments between fastener holes so the area of the gasket is substantially less than the area of the flanges. In this manner, the clamping pressure exerted by the flanges on the gasket is increased.

  • Patent number: 6340211
Abstract: A method of changing between two operator stations in a cab of a locomotive for controlling the brakes of the locomotive and of a train of railway cars connected to the locomotive. The stations each have at least one brake handle and an associated selector switch, with each of the switches being electrically connected to a brake control computer. The method includes stopping the train if the train is in motion and placing the brake valve handles of the stations in a position to apply the brakes at full service. • Patent number: 6324789
Abstract: A door support and drive mechanism for a door can be mounted either over or in a door opening in a transit vehicle or other structure. The mechanism includes a tube which has a longitudinal slot. The mechanism also has mounts attached to the tube for mounting the mechanism to the structure over the door opening, so that the tube is substantially horizontal and the slot is along a lower portion of the tube. The mechanism includes at least one door hanger which has an upper portion movably disposed within the tube and a depending portion passing through the slot, the depending portion being for attachment to the door. The mechanism has a drive nut attached to the door hanger. A drive screw is positioned in the tube, engaging a threaded inner portion of the drive nut. The drive screw is connectable to a rotary power device to be rotated thereby. Rotation of the drive screw causes longitudinal movement of the drive nut and the hanger to which the drive nut is attached, so that the door is moved longitudinally.

  • Patent number: 6321922
Abstract: A shock-resistant coupler for a vehicle includes a substantially hollow draft gear tube and a coupler head. The draft gear tube has an inside surface, and the coupler head has a flexible, substantially hollow shank portion. The shank portion has a distal end that extends into one end, or mouth, of the draft gear tube. A collar on the distal end features a predetermined number of longitudinally extending relief grooves. Formed in the shank portion adjacent the distal end thereof are at least two slots that extend longitudinally from the collar. These slots enable the distal end of the shank portion to be compressed inwardly so that the shank portion may be inserted into the draft gear tube. A plurality of shear bolts, directed radially through openings in the draft gear tube and corresponding threaded holes in the collar, enable the shank portion to be secured against the inside surface of the draft gear tube.

  • Patent number: 6305756
Abstract: An empty/load brake control system mountable on a sprung and an unsprung member of a railway car and disposed between the car brake control valve and brake cylinder for adjusting the brake cylinder pressure during a brake application according to the car load condition. Such system includes an empty/load sensor valve device and a sensor arm coupled to a sensor cable whose movement is controlled by a sprung member and a terminal member disposed on an end of sensor cable, in contact with sprung member so that any downward movement of sprung member forces such terminal member in a similar downward direction and similarly pulls on the sensor cable. A piston, under pressure, urges the sensor arm to rotate and retract sensor cable but must overcome resistance of a spring. The system includes a load proportional valve.

  • Patent number: 6305313
Abstract: A temperature indicator for indicating when a specified temperature has been exceeded in a fluid flow through a conduit. Such conduit having an aperture and the temperature indicator being mountable in such aperture and engagable therewith such that the temperature indicator projects through such aperture and into such fluid flow in such conduit. The temperature indicator includes a housing which substantially encloses an internal chamber and has a bore extending from the internal chamber to an external surface of the housing. An indicator member is disposed, at least in part, within the internal chamber and extends into the bore. A biasing element is disposed within the internal chamber and exerts a biasing force between the housing and the indicator member and urges the indicator member toward the bore. A bonding agent forms a bond between the indicator member and the housing to thereby restrain the indicator member from movement toward the bore under action of the biasing element.

  • Patent number: 6302664
Abstract: An axial load resistant anti-rotation bearing for a rotary scroll compressor is disclosed. The rotary scroll compressor includes stationary and orbiting scroll elements and a drive mechanism for driving the orbiting scroll element in an orbit about the stationary scroll element. The stationary and orbiting scroll elements are intermeshed and nested to form at least one spiraling compression pocket therebetween. The at least one compression pocket generates forces which tend to force the stationary and orbiting scroll elements apart in a direction parallel to their central axes. The axial load resistant anti-rotation bearing disclosed resists such axial separating forces and employs two rotational bearing components, a first rotational bearing component mounted on the interior of the compressor housing and a second rotational bearing component mounted on the orbiting scroll element.
