  • Patent number: 4461486
Abstract: Scraper rings are known which are mounted in the back plate of a hydraulic cylinder to scrape a hydraulic piston rod. Known scrapers are not very suitable for applications where the piston rod is liable to movement and vibration e.g. in pneumatic pistons and cylinders. The present invention provides a shaft scraper ring arrangement in which the scraper ring is so supported so as to be movable, to a limited extent, in a plane transverse to the shaft or rod which is to be scraped. Cylinder 1 contains a piston 2 and a back plate 3. Supported centrally in the back plate 3 is a housing 4 which supports a plate 5 carrying a rod scraper 5a. Piston 2 is supported by a piston rod 2a which is scraped by the rod scraper. A seal 10 located on the rod scraper plate 5 bears against the rod 2a. Rod scraper plate 5 has limited freedom for movement in a plane transverse to the rod 2a. The plate 5 is loosely carried by the housing 4 being located between two felt oil retaining annular rings 8.

  • Patent number: 4433505
Abstract: A plug door for a vehicle, such as a railway carriage, is carried and driven by a swinging lever which has a sliding fulcrum mechanism the effect of which is to flatten the arc through which the door is carried. The edge of the door which trails in an opening movement is guided either by means of a relatively long pivot arm or by a curved or straight track. The alternative guide means give different trajectories to the leading edge of the door, the long pivot arm guide keeps the door closest to the side of the vehicle during opening. A duplicate swinging lever with sliding fulcrum mechanism as a guide for the trailing edge will move the door parallel to the side of the vehicle and the sliding fulcrums will substantially reduce the outward excursion. By mounting the driving swinging lever over-center, i.e. closer to the trailing edge of the door the plug action is provided for so that a closed door may be flush with the vehicle skin.

  • Patent number: 4364609
Abstract: Empty/load control valve apparatus is proposed for use with direct release triple valves which operate by switching in an extra volume with the brake cylinder for empty loaded conditions. This improvement provides a valve operated in response to leakage away of brake cylinder pressure to enable dissipation also of the extra volume pressure to prevent brake cylinder isolation resulting from the extra volume pressure.

  • Patent number: 4346309
Abstract: When the forward load current through a thyristor is commutated it does not immediately recover its availability to block forward current flow due to re-applied forward voltage, the time taken for this blocking ability to return is known as the thyristor turn-off time. Hitherto a low valued current has been passed through the thyristor immediately after commutation in the reverse direction to achieve reduction of the turn-off time. The present invention operates to achieve a greater reduction of the turn-off time by passing a low-valued current through the thyristor in a forward direction immediately after commutation. Several alternative circuit arrangements and operating configurations for supplying the forward recovery current are described.

  • Patent number: 4319787
Abstract: A rail vehicle braking apparatus which operates with brake control valves on successive vehicles of a train controlled by pressure in a brake pipe extending along the train has warning means responsive to rising brake pipe fluid flow to warn of possible non-released brakes in the train and the warning means being inhibited by a rising fluid pressure-sensing means to prevent an undesired warning due to brake pipe fluid flow during release of the brakes.

  • Patent number: 4305556
Abstract: A computer based railway interlocking control system, having triple parallel redundant control computers (FIG. 2) provides greater system reliability as compared to a single computer system. The railway traffic control devices, e.g. points and signals, are arranged to be controlled by signals in one of two possible steady states, the interlocking control means (30, 31, 32, FIG. 2) is arranged to produce control signals in the steady state for de-energized or "safe" device settings and in an alternating state for energized or potentially "unsafe" settings. The alternating control signals (33, 34, 35 or 38) must be converted to the corresponding steady state to operate the devices thus, the converting or restoring circuit discriminates against dormant wrong side failures, i.e. "unsafe" signals to increase the inherent safety of the system.

  • Patent number: 4270715
Abstract: The specification discloses an electronic or computer-based railway control signal interlocking system. Signals representing the settings or conditions of railway control elements e.g. track circuits, signals and points, and their control signals are checked as usual by the interlock equipment to establish route safety. However failures in the system may only be discovered when a change to a control element setting is attempted. Since long periods can elapse between changes a failure may lie dormant for some time. In order to reduce dormant wrong side failure periods to a minimum the signals supplied to the interlocking equipment are periodically switched to a predetermined state chosen to prove that when the interlocking equipment receives the switched signal that a wrong side failure mode does not exist in the switched signal path.

  • Patent number: 4264110
Abstract: The invention concerns an electrically assisted pneumatic train braking system. In a normal emergency/service pneumatic braking system a pneumatic pressure change must propagate along the train braking system from car to car. The present system includes two valves which are connected to each end of the brake pipe of each car, the first is responsive to a pressure change in the brake pipe to produce an electrical signal and the second being responsive to the electrical signal to produce a pressure change in the brake pipe. Thus, the propagation time for the whole braking system is reduced to little more than that for the total length of the couplings between cars.

  • Patent number: 4141179
Abstract: A vehicle door arrangement in which a lower edge part of the door is retractable upwards into the main part of the door prior to opening. This ensures that when the vehicle is standing alongside a platform, there is no risk of the bottom of the door fouling the platform. The arrangement is particularly suitable for slide and plug doors which move outwards and then alongside the vehicle when opening. Even if the bottom of the door is normally above the platform, the invention provides an essential safety feature to cope with situations where the vehicle is abnormally depressed, e.g. by excessive loading or suspension failure. Moreover, the invention enables the height of the interior floor of vehicle to be optimized with respect to platform level so as to enhance passenger safety and convenience, whereas with prior art rigid one-piece doors, clearance requirements dictated non-optimum floor heights.

  • Patent number: 4117463
Abstract: Continuity detector apparatus is coupled into duplicate conductors connected in parallel between each rail of a track section and an energy source or occupancy receiver of an associated track circuit to detect and register a fault in either parallel conductor and to indicate need for corrective action to restore the operational security provided by the duplicate circuit paths. In one form, each detector is a two-winding relay with one winding inserted in series in each of the duplicate circuit paths so poled that equal track current flows in opposite directions in the winding, when both conductors are unbroken to hold the relay released. Any interruption of either parallel conductor causes the relay to pick up to register the fault and transmit a corresponding indication. In a second form, a different transformer winding is connected with each conductor.
