Abstract: A computer system creates and stores a library of LiDAR models for standard trees that have measured characteristics. A point cloud of LiDAR data from an unidentified tree in a forest is compared against a point cloud defined by a LiDAR model of a standard tree in the library to find a match. If a match is found, one or more characteristics of the matching standard tree are associated with the unidentified tree.
Abstract: A system and method for identifying stands or portions thereof that are not growing as expected. In one embodiment, a computer system compares a measured leaf area index of a stand that is determined from remotely sensed data to an expected leaf area index. The computer system identifies stands or portions of stands where the measured leaf area index is greater than the expected leaf area index and/or stands or portions of stands where the measured leaf area index is less than the expected leaf area index. In one embodiment, the comparison is used to identify stands or portions thereof where silviculture treatments may be necessary.

Abstract: Cellulose filtration products comprising nonwoven lyocell fiber webs in which the fibers have a diameter of from 3 to 12 microns, the largest pore diameter of less than about 300 microns and a mean flow pore diameter of less than about 150 microns are disclosed. Multilayer nonwoven lyocell fiber webs are also disclosed which have lower mean flow pore diameters and lower pore sizes.
Abstract: Lignin has a weight average molecular weight of at least 6,000 daltons and comprising (a) from 2% to 10% of a low molecular component having a weight average molecular weight (MW) of from 300 to 1500 daltons, and (b) from 10% to 50% of a high molecular weight component having a weight average molecular weight (MW) of at least 10,000 daltons; and exhibiting a Tg of from 100° C. to 130° C. when measured by differential scanning calorimetry.
Abstract: The disclosure relates to systems and methods for detecting features on billets of laminated veneer lumber (LVL). In some embodiments, an LVL billet is provided and passed through a scanning assembly. The scanning assembly includes an x-ray generator and an x-ray detector. The x-ray generator generates a beam of x-ray radiation and the x-ray detector measures intensity of the beam of x-ray radiation after is passes through the LVL billet. The measured intensity is then processed to create an image. Images taken according to the disclosure may then be analyzed to detect features on the LVL billet.
Abstract: In one aspect, an improved nutritive media is provided that comprises from 10 g/L to 100 g/L of an adsorbent material, from 350 mg/L to 450 mg/L of NH4NO3, from 2000 mg/L to 3000 mg/L of KH2PO4, from 5 mg/L to 25 mg/L of FeSO4, from 600 mg/L to 1500 mg/L of MgSO4; and at least one component selected from the group consisting of: from 150 mg/L to 300 mg/L of Myo-inositol, from 1.5 mg/L to 3.0 mg/L of Thiamine-HCl, from 0.30 mg/L to 0.80 mg/L of Pyridoxine-HCl, from 1.5 mg/L to 3.0 mg/L of Nicotinic acid, from 0.15 mg/L to 0.30 mg/L of Riboflavin, from 0.75 mg/L to 2.0 mg/L of Ca-pantothenate, from 0.01 mg/L to 0.03 mg/L of Biotin and from 0.15 mg/L to 0.30 mg/L of Folic Acid. In another aspect, a manufactured seed is provided comprising the improved nutritive media.
Abstract: A combination biomass harvester and baler, in some embodiments, can include a self-propelled vehicle base, an engine compartment, a fuel and radiator compartment, a movement mechanism operably connected to the self-propelled vehicle base, a cutting head assembly, a transfer assembly, and a baler assembly. The baler assembly may be configured to consolidate the biomass into one or more bales. A bale carrying platform is provided to store the bales while the combination biomass harvester and baler continues to move.

Abstract: A false color composite image is created by assigning mid infrared data from three time-spaced images of an area of interest to corresponding RGB color components for the false color composite image. The RGB color components for the false color composite image are then converted into color space data and classified into a number of color classes. An age is assigned to the color classes to create a classified image of age classes of the area of interest.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to methods for interplanting a primary crop and an energy crop. In some embodiments, the present disclosure includes methods for preparing a plantation site for planting the energy crop. Plantation sites according to the disclosure may include a primary crop planted in a first row and in a second row, the first row being separated by an intermediate row. The intermediate row is divided into a center portion and two side portions (a first side portion and a second side portion). Methods according to embodiments of the disclosure include the steps of lifting a soil and plantation debris mixture from the intermediate area, redepositing a soil component of the soil and plantation debris mixture primarily into the center portion, and redepositing a plantation debris component of the soil and plantation debris mixture primarily into at least one of the two side portions.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to soil treating systems and shearing assemblies for use in forestry operations. Embodiments of soil treating systems according to the disclosure include a movement assembly having a front end and a back end, a shearing assembly mounted on the front end of the movement assembly, and leveling assembly mounted on the back end of the movement assembly. In some embodiments shearing assemblies are inverted V-type shearing assemblies. Further aspects of the disclosure are directed towards methods for using soil treating systems and shearing assemblies for preparing land for interplanting an energy crop with a primary crop.

Abstract: A method for making a web comprising a layer of crosslinked cellulosic fiber overlaid on and fastened to at least one layer of regenerated cellulose fiber. In one method the crosslinked cellulosic fiber is be sandwiched between two regenerated cellulose fiber layers. The regenerated cellulose can be viscose or lyocell or be made from several solvents.
Abstract: A system for identifying forest stands within an area of interest that are exhibiting abnormal growth determines a relationship between vegetation index (VI) values determined from a first and a second image of the area of interest. From the relationship, an expected or predicted VI value for each forest stand is determined and compared with the actual VI value computed for the forest stand from the first image. Those forest stands with a difference between the actual and predicted VI values that exceed a threshold are identified as exhibiting abnormal growth.
