Patent number: 5397866Abstract: An acoustic horn assembly for use as part of an electronic siren system for an emergency vehicle comprises a pair of integrated molded, rigid plastic members which cooperate to define a pair of divergent sound passages. The entrance ends of these sound passages are displaced do that they may be coupled to separate sound generators, the sound generators being supported from respective vehicle frame side rails. The sound generators are coupled to the sound passage entrance ends by adjustable length sound transmission conduits which are in the form of elbows.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1993Date of Patent: March 14, 1995Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Harold W. Patent number: 5337082Abstract: A method of and apparatus for providing information which may be used in making traffic management decisions for limited access highways is disclosed. The method and apparatus employs microwave radar to obtain information bearing signals which are processed to determine the vehicle direction and speed. The apparatus includes the capability of emulating in-the-road or on-the-road sensors to provide output pulse pairs which appear as if generated by switch closures. The method and apparatus also has the capability of providing "wake-up" signals commensurate with a predetermined number of consecutive vehicles which pass a preselected point traveling at an abnormally low speed. Because the method and apparatus are vehicle direction sensitive, the capability of monitoring traffic flow by looking across lanes is also present.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1992Date of Patent: August 9, 1994Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Thomas M. Fredericks

Patent number: 5170162Abstract: The direction of motion of objects is sampled to determine, in a manner in which substantially avoids false alarms, whether there is object motion in a direction of interest. Systems employing such sampling methodology generate a warning signal in response to a vehicular traffic condition of interest and include at least a pair of motion detectors. Each motion detector processes motion information bearing signals to determine distance traveled in a predetermined time period to minimize false alarms.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1990Date of Patent: December 8, 1992Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Thomas M. Patent number: 5160874Abstract: A modular-type lightbar assembly has an elongated base having a bottom panel and a pair of oblique integrally extending front and rear sides. Lens elements are mounted to the base and a cover by lock and groove-type connections. Warning beacon units are mounted to platforms supported on base. The beacon units rotate for sequentially directing light through the front and rear lens elements. The beacon units have an efficient integral base which mounts the rotating beacon and a brush assembly for the motor. An electronic controller is employed to apply a pulse width modulated current to the beacon motor so that a fast and slow motor speed may be selected.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 1991Date of Patent: November 3, 1992Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Harold W. Patent number: 5157382Abstract: Information as to a direction(s) to be followed to avoid a hazard is unambiguously transmitted by energizing lamps of an array in accordance with stored data whereby unique sequential flash patterns are generated. A selectable pattern includes a long initial flash followed by a plurality of relatively short flashes which progress in stepwise fashion in the direction of desired observer motion, the pattern ending with a terminal lamp of the array being flashed repetitively. The pattern is then caused to repeat after an off time which is of long duration relative to at least the short flashes of the pattern.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1990Date of Patent: October 20, 1992Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: James L. Patent number: 5045982Abstract: A dual emitter light assembly employs a reflector having a pair of concave reflector dishes. Each dish is associated with a lamp socket. Each concave dish comprises at least three parabolic reflector surfaces having a common focal point. The axes of the parabolas of revolution which define the reflector surfaces are non-parallel and lie in a common plane, the axis of both dishes lying in the same plane.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1989Date of Patent: September 3, 1991Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: H. Patent number: 5040103Abstract: A light assembly for wide area illumination employs a lens insert having a pair of opposed surfaces. One surface of the insert is defined by a series of closely spaced parallel prismatic refractors for directing light incident thereon generally in a first direction. The light assembly also includes arrays of optical elements for spreading light passing through the refractors in a pair of mutually orthogonal directions.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1990Date of Patent: August 13, 1991Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Harold W. Patent number: 5016139Abstract: An electronic power supply which employs energy storage capacitors has an enclosure defining a housing including a base and a cover. The capacitors are resiliently supported within the enclosure on a carrier. Integral receivers extend from the underside of the top of the cover in registration with the carrier and engage the capacitors to clamp the capacitors in a fixed position within the housing. The housing exterior includes a thermal radiator consisting of multiple fins which extend outwardly from the receivers for dissipating heat generated in the capacitors.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 1989Date of Patent: May 14, 1991Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventors: James L. Patent number: 5013973Abstract: A power supply for intermittently energized loads, particularly gas discharge tubes employed as high intensity lights, has a pair of capacitances which are charged to a high voltage level to provide primary and secondary sources of anode voltage for the load. A coupling circuit impedes the discharge of the secondary anode voltage source capacitance when the primary anode voltage source capacitance is discharged through the load whereby a high voltage is present at the load, i.e., a discharge tube anode, immediately subsequent to the tube being extinguished thus reducing the time between successive firings of the tube. The current available for recharging the primary anode voltage source capacitance may also be increased during the time periods when the tube is being rapidly and repetitively fired.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 1989Date of Patent: May 7, 1991Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: James L. Patent number: 4954938Abstract: A warning light having a wide angle radiation pattern and the ability to accept either an incandescent lamp or gaseous discharge tube as the light source is disclosed. The wide angle radiation pattern is, in part, achieved through the use a reflector having three separate surfaces which define parabolas with different axes and a common focal point, two of these parabolic reflector surfaces being spacially separated from one another and extending from the third reflective surface. The light emitter is supported from the third parabolic reflector surface such that the lamp filament or the gaseous discharge tube will extend through the common focal point.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1989Date of Patent: September 4, 1990Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: H. Patent number: 4908601Abstract: A siren having one or more stacked speakers, each speaker having a substantially circular lower horn member having an upwardly facing surface including a substantially convex annular portion and a substantially concave central cavity portion. A substantially circular upper horn member having a downwardly facing surface including a substantially convex annular outer portion and a central opening, is spaced above the lower horn member, thereby defining an annular, radially outwardly diverging sound director between the upper and lower horn members. A diffuser horn is coupled to a central opening in the upper horn member and projects downwardly into the cavity portion of the lower horn member. A siren driver is mounted in the upper horn member adjacent to the central opening for projecting a sound wave through the diffuser horn into the cavity, where the sound wave is reflected upwardly out of the cavity into the sound director, through which the sound is projected horizontally in a 360.degree. pattern.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1987Date of Patent: March 13, 1990Assignee: Whelen Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Bruce W.
