Patent number: 4947668Abstract: A rolling milling tool is constructed so that the roller, in the form of a sphere, or cylinder or cone, is supported in a hydrostatic bearing to avoid counter rollers, thereby reducing the size of such tools. The roller is held in a bearing socket or guide chamber which may provide for an axial play of the roller in the chamber. The bearing socket or guide chamber is formed in a roller head which may be itself constructed for being chucked in a tool holder, or the roller head may be received in a housing which is held in a tool holder of a machine tool, such as a lathe. Ducts connect the hydrostatic bearing to a source of fluid pressure. The tool is suitable for a smooth rolling and/or work hardening roller operation.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1989Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Wilhelm Hegenscheidt GmbHInventor: Alfred Ostertag

Patent number: 4802285Abstract: A method and apparatus measure or gage worn railroad wheel profiles for the purposes of ascertaining the location of the new profile relative to the worn profile. The new profile is to be produced by a reprofiling operation such as a truing. For this purpose characteristic points on the worn profile are contacted in a radial and axial direction by a sensor and the respective displacement of the sensor is measured or gaged relative to a zero or null point. The location of the sensed points is then compared in a computer with a given reference location on a corrected profile. The corrected profile is then contacted with the sensed or gaged point which will make it possible to restore a correct profile with the least possible material removal in a milling or machining operation.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1987Date of Patent: February 7, 1989Assignee: Wilhelm Hegenscheidt GmbHInventors: Herbert Ligacz, Alfred Heimann, Hartwig Klosterhalfen, Helmut Wittkopp

Patent number: 4799839Abstract: Work pieces, especially of rotational symmetry, are machined in a rotary broaching operation. The machine tool for this purpose has a tool carrier carrying a plurality of cutting edges arranged on a curved path in a radial work piece plane. In order to reduce down-time and to simplify the construction of the broaching apparatus, the insertion of a work piece blank into the apparatus and the removal of a finished work piece from the apparatus are preferably performed without interrupting the motions of a tool carrier. For this purpose the tool carrier is provided with a zone which is free of cutting tool edges. This tool free zone of the tool carrier is located downstream of the last cutting edge as viewed in the rotational direction of the tool carrier. This feature avoids the need for a return stroke of the tool carrier. Accordingly, respective return slides and return controls are also obviated.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1987Date of Patent: January 24, 1989Assignee: Wilhelm Hegenscheidt GmbHInventors: Garri Berstein, Hans W. Patent number: 4680846Abstract: Track wheels, especially railroad wheels, are trued in a material saving manner by first displacing material from zones of lesser wear to zones of higher wear on the wheel tread and/or on the wheel flange including the flank area of the flange, especially that part of the flank merging the flange into the tread zone. The location of the new or restored tread is then determined and a material removing operation such as milling or turning is performed. The material displacing may be performed by a rolling or forging operation prior to the milling or turning operation.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1986Date of Patent: July 21, 1987Assignee: Wilhelm Hegenscheidt GmbHInventor: Herbert Feldewert

Patent number: RE35519Abstract: A method and apparatus for smooth-rolling and deep-rolling the journal pins of multi-crank crankshafts divides the crank pins into two groups, each including alternating crank pins, since the space between neighboring crank pins is insufficient for simultaneously rolling all of the pins including the main bearing pins in one operation. Each group of crank pins is then rolled separately in succession, whereby one group includes the main bearing pins. Thus, a crankshaft, including any number of closely spaced crank pins, can be completely machined in two rolling operations. In order to carry out this method a rolling apparatus includes crank pin rolling devices for each of the pins of one group. The rolling devices are axially slideably adjustable in unison between two determinable positions in which they may be fixed or locked after adjustment.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1994Date of Patent: May 27, 1997Assignee: Wilhelm Hegenscheidt GmbHInventor: Rudolf Winkens
