  • Patent number: 7347867
Abstract: A conduit is provided to provide a bypass around a blockage in the coronary artery. The conduit is adapted to be positioned in the myocardium or heart wall to provide a passage for blood to flow between a chamber of the heart such as the left ventricle and the coronary artery, distal to the blockage. The stent is self-expanding or uses a balloon to expand the stent in the heart wall. Various attachment means are provided to anchor the stent and prevent its migration.

  • Patent number: 7133725
Abstract: A composition of microscopic devices utilizable in a medical diagnostic or therapeutic procedure. Each microscopic device includes a nanostructure provided with a ligand for effectively coupling the nanostructure to a predetermined chemical or molecular site. A medical method in part comprises inserting the medical devices into a patient, attaching the nanostructures via the respective ligands to instances of a predetermined type of target structure inside the patient, and thereafter activating the nanostructures to perform a preselected medical diagnostic or therapeutic function.

  • Patent number: 7060021
Abstract: In a method for improving cardiac function, a compressive device is inserted into an intrapericardial space about a lower end portion of a heart. Thereafter the compressive device is operated to compress and close off lower portions of both ventricles of the heart.

  • Patent number: 6980688
Abstract: A method for investigating structural integrity utilizes a carrier member having a flexible surface and a plurality of electromechanical transducer elements attached to the carrier member, the transducer elements being spaced from each other along at least two spatial dimensions. The method includes conforming the flexible surface to a solid structural member, so that a substantial portion of the flexible member is in effective wave-transmitting engagement with the structural member, thereafter transmitting pressure waves from at least one of the transducer elements into the structural member, receiving pressure waves reflected from an internal structural defect in the structural member in response to the pressure waves transmitted from the one of the transducer elements, and analyzing the received pressure waves so as to detect the structural defect.

  • Patent number: 6776754
Abstract: A cardiac insert or implant is deployed in a patient's heart so as to reduce ventricular volume, thereby improving cardiac function. The insert or implant may be a compressive device such as a tensile member inserted into the patient's heart, and thereafter operated or deployed to bring opposite walls of a ventricle of the patient's heart into at least approximate contact with one another to thereby constrict and close off a lower portion of that ventricle. The compressive device or tensile member is insertable into the patient heart via a catheter threaded through the patient's vascular system and into the patient's heart.

  • Patent number: 6572529
Abstract: A surgical method for assisting cardiac function utilizes a balloon initially in a collapsed configuration. The balloon is inserted into an intrapericardial space about a patient's heart and is disposed about one portion of the patient's heart. The method further includes inflating the balloon in the intrapericardial space to compress one portion of the patient's heart. A lower end portion of the patient's heart is separately compressed by an additional instrumentality to reduce ventricular volume.

  • Patent number: 6517484
Abstract: An ultrasonic medical imaging system comprises a calibration system, a transducer position determination system and an image formation system. The calibration system adjusts the remaining two systems and is part of the overall medical imaging system. A position determination system may discretely determine positions of sensors or sensor arrays considered as rigid bodies, or may continuously determine a shape of a flexible essentially two-dimensional body or mat in which the sensors or sensor arrays are embedded. The position determination system may be internal to a mechanical skeleton or armature joining the transducers or transducer arrays, internal to a two-dimensional body in which the transducers or arrays are embedded, or external to such systems.

  • Patent number: 6447400
Abstract: A golf course has a single fairway with multiple greens. At least two greens are provided, at opposite ends of the fairway. One or more additional greens may be provided between the first two greens and along the fairway. Also, multiple tees are provided for the one fairway. At least one tee is provided at each end of the fairway, the tee facing down the fairway towards the green at the opposite end of the fairway. Each green may be the target of two or more tees disposed at different locations on the fairway. The golf course is occupied for a predetermined limited period of time by an individual or a single group of golfers. The individual or single group of golfers plays back and forth along the fairway, for as long as they have reserved the course. They can play at their own pace, undisturbed by other golfers because there are no other golfers on the course. The only limitation is duration: eventually they will have to stop because their reserved interval of play has terminated.

  • Patent number: 6134184
Abstract: An apparatus for chasing animals from an automobile includes a generator for producing energy which can be sensed by animals, means for mounting the generator to an automobile, and an activation device operatively connected to the generator for activating the generator upon detecting presence of an animal near the automobile. The activation device may include a motion sensor or an infrared sensor. The motion detector may take the form of an ultrasonic sensor, which is sensitive to vibrations in an ultrasonic frequency range.

  • Patent number: 5835012
Abstract: A protective method for storage and transport containers comprises a sensor for detecting orientation, an attachment element for securing the sensor to a container, and an alarm operatively coupled to the sensor for generating a cognizable alert signal upon detection by the sensor that the container is in an orientation other than a predetermined preferred orientation. The alarm may include an electroacoustic transducer and means for reproducing a voice message. A timer operatively connected to the sensor measures a time interval during which the container is in an orientation other than the preferred orientation. A memory is operatively connected to the timer for automatically storing the time interval in encoded form. A mechanism and/or circuit may be operatively connected to the timer and the memory for deactivating the timer and for locking the memory to ensure integrity of contents of the memory upon an opening of the container. The method may also include a detector for measuring temperature.
