  • Patent number: 7200112
Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for internetworking WWAN and WLAN are disclosed. More specifically, a method, system, and apparatus for a mobile station to sense and select a WLAN or a WWAN are disclosed. A mobile station may communicate according to an 802.xx wireless local area network air interface protocol via WLAN logic or according to a wireless wide area network air interface protocol via WWAN logic. The mobile station detects RF energy in the 802.xx spectrum and, in response to the energy detection, determines whether there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station by performing a scanning operation. If there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station, the mobile station selects the WLAN logic so that it may communicate via an air interface. Under some embodiments, WWAN has information identifying the areas in which capable WLANs operate and the WWAN provisions the mobile station with at least a subset of such information.

  • Patent number: 6850763
Abstract: The present invention provides a proxy switch, communication methods, and communication logic for use in a mobile network. A proxy switch is deployed between a base station subsystem and a mobile station center. The proxy switch receives signaling messages and either retransmits them, blocks them, converts them, or siphons them to an alternative network. Besides providing an ability to offload mobile traffic it provides a platform for new communication services.

  • Patent number: 6801771
Abstract: A proxy switch, communication methods, and communication logic for use in a mobile network are described. A proxy switch is deployed between a base station subsystem and a mobile station center. It receives signaling messages and either retransmits them, blocks them, converts them, or siphons them to an alternative network. Besides providing an ability to offload offload mobile traffic it provides a platform for new communication services. Among other things, to handle mobility management within the network, a proxy switch includes signaling message handling logic for receiving signaling messages from the MSC and BS in accordance with a mobile signaling protocol. The switch also includes state logic for maintaining state information of call sessions and mobile stations (MSs) used within the mobile communications network, and message interception logic for detecting whether the signaling message is a handoff message from a MS.

  • Patent number: 6748247
Abstract: Methods and systems for determining and maintaining dormancy timers for subscribers in a wireless wide area network that promote efficient use of the radio channels are disclosed. Subscriber usage is monitored to determine subscriber usage statistics. Based on the subscriber statistics, a dormancy timer value is determined for a given subscriber. The dormancy timer for the given subscriber is then set with the dormancy timer value.

A proxy switch is deployed between a base station subsystem and a mobile station center. It receives signaling messages and either retransmits them, blocks them, converts them, or siphons them to an alternative network. Besides providing an ability to offload offload mobile traffic it provides a platform for new communication services. A mobile communications network has at least one BS, at least one MS, at least one MSC, and at least one switch in communication with at least one of the BSs and the at least one of the MSCs. A BS is in trunk line communication with the switch and the trunk line communication is organized as bearer circuits, each bearer circuit identifiable with a circuit identification code (CIC). The switch receives signaling messages from the BS and determines if a call corresponding to the signaling message is to be handled by the alternative communication network.

  • Patent number: 6633767
Abstract: Interconnections are managed in a mobile communications network. A first connection is provided between a first device and a second device in the network. The first device includes a proxy switch for use in the network. The proxy switch includes signaling message handling logic for receiving messages in accordance with a mobile signaling protocol. A second connection is provided between the first device and a third device in the network. It is determined that a condition exists in the network that affects the operation of the first device. A third connection is established between the second device and the third device in the network.

  • Publication number: 20030148779
Abstract: Call establishment is expedited in mobile communications. While a mobile station (MS) is in a dormant state, the mobile station is prepared for a half duplex mobile communications telephone call. In response to a user's initiation of the half duplex mobile communications telephone call, the half duplex mobile communications telephone call is established based on the preparation of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6545992
Abstract: A method and system of determining a GGSN to serve data calls in a mobile communications network is provided. Messages are received from a SGSN, and analyzed to determine if the message is requesting the identity of a GGSN. If the received message is requesting the identity of a GGSN, a GGSN selection algorithm is executed to identify a GGSN to serve data calls from a specified MS. A reply is then constructed and sent to the SGSN identifying the selected GGSN.
