  • Patent number: 11949086
Abstract: A battery paste application tooling assembly includes a hopper, a connector assembly, and a clamp assembly. The battery paste application tooling assembly can be equipped in a pasting machine. The hopper receives battery paste material. The hopper has an orifice plate with an orifice therein. The connector assembly is engageable with the orifice plate and disengageable therefrom. The clamp assembly is movable between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the clamp assembly releasable secures the orifice plate to the hopper. In the second position, the clamp assembly permits removal of the orifice plate from the hopper.

  • Patent number: 10232453
Abstract: A system, apparatus and method for cutting battery grids or plates from a continuous strip of a plurality of connected battery grids. The continuous strip moves toward a rotating cutter with at least two cutter blades with cutting edges equally circumferentially spaced apart and extending parallel to the cutter axis of rotation and a rotating cooperating anvil. The cutting edges and the anvil are rotated at the same tangential speed to cut in a nip between them a plate or grid from the continuous strip of connected grids. At a point upstream of the cutter, an electric signal indicative of each lug of the grid of the continuous strip moving past this point is used to control the speed of movement of the strip through the nip to cut a plate or grid from the continuous strip at a longitudinal speed which is essentially the same as the tangential speed of the cutting edges.

  • Patent number: 9744552
Abstract: A battery grid pasting system includes a battery grid pasting machine, a sensing station, and a controller. The battery grid pasting machine includes a conveying apparatus confronting a hopper's dispensing end across a space, and includes a motor actuatable to cause variance of the space and hence variance of the amount of battery paste received on carried battery grids through the space. The sensing station senses a value of a property of a pasted battery grid. And the controller receives the sensed value of the property and controls actuation of the motor based in part or more on the received value.

  • Patent number: 9437867
Abstract: A battery plate grid strip pasting assembly can include an orifice plate, a support structure, and a belt. The orifice plate has an opening through which battery paste material is dispensed out of a hopper. The support structure underlies a battery plate grid strip and supports the battery plate grid strip upstream of the opening. The belt traverses beneath the orifice plate and carries the battery plate grid strip downstream of the opening and downstream of the support structure. The support structure supports the battery plate grid strip above the belt and a gap is provided between a bottom surface of the battery plate grid strip and a top surface of the belt. Battery paste material is dispensed into the gap, through the battery plate grid strip, and overpastes the bottom surface of the battery plate grid strip.

  • Patent number: 5099982
Abstract: Apparatus for piling in stacks a plurality of successive individual battery plates moving at a high rate of speed. Synchronized plates are transferred to a carrier conveyor which advances them into work stations with the leading edge of each plate raised generally vertically above its trailing edge. Sequentially in one and another of the stations, each plate is rapidly stopped so that a plurality of succeeding synchronized plates are each disengaged from the carrier and deposited in a stack on an elevator underlying each station. The elevator is retracted as each plate is deposited so that the next plate can be received on the stack. Periodically, the depositing of plates is switched from one station to another and stacks of plates are removed from the elevator associated with each station so that another stack can be formed on the elevator.

  • Patent number: 4606383
Abstract: A battery grid pasting machine has an endless steel conveyor belt for advancing grids beneath a paste hopper. The lower end of the hopper is closed by an orifice plate. The top run of the belt is supported by a vertically adjustable roller directly beneath an orifice slot in the orifice plate. A guide assembly is provided for advancing the grids in a downwardly inclined position toward the underside of the hopper. The hopper and the belt conveyor assembly are supported from one side of the machine in cantilever fashion which enables the hopper and the endless belt to be removed and replaced with a minimum dismantling of components of the machine.

  • Patent number: 4545422
Abstract: A machine for casting battery grids continuously includes a rotary, cylindrical drum in the outer peripheral surface of which the battery grid cavity is machined in the form of a plurality of intersecting axially and circumferentially extending grooves. A shoe is arranged in close fitting, mating engagement with an arcuate segment of the peripheral surface of the drum. The shoe has a molten lead passageway therein which communicates with the peripheral surface of the drum by means of an orifice slot extending lengthwise of the shoe and across the drum. Molten lead under superatmospheric pressure is directed into a tube extending lengthwise within the lead passageway in the shoe and provided with a plurality of openings spaced lengthwise of the tube. The lead is discharged through these openings into the lead passageway, through the orifice slot and against the surface of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4544014
Abstract: A machine for casting battery grids in a continuous manner includes a rotary cylindrical drum in the outer peripheral surface of which the battery grid pattern is machined as a cavity. A shoe is arranged against an arcuate segment of the peripheral surface of the drum. An orifice slot in the shoe has an opening at the peripheral surface of the drum. Molten lead under superatmospheric pressure is directed into the orifice slot in an amount in excess of that required to fill the grid cavity on the drum through the opening in the orifice slot as the drum rotates. Means are provided in the shoe for maintaining the molten lead in the orifice slot in a highly fluid condition and for causing the lead filling the grid cavity to solidify rapidly as it advanced beyond the opening of the orifice slot.

  • Patent number: 4543863
Abstract: Apparatus for severing a continuous web at preselected locations spaced lengthwise of the web which includes a first drive for advancing the web at substantially uniform velocity in the direction of its length through a predetermined fixed path. A circular mandrel is mounted for rotation adjacent to the web path and has a plurality of cutter blades at uniform angular intervals around the periphery thereof. A differential transmission couples the mandrel to the web drive and is controlled by a stepper motor to advance or retard angular velocity of the cutter mandrel as compared with linear velocity of the web. A pair of sensors are respectively responsive to motion of the web and rotation of the cutter blades toward the position of cutting engagement.

  • Patent number: 4489772
Abstract: A continuous casting machine for battery grids includes a rotary drum on the outer peripheral surface of which the battery grid pattern is formed by a series of grooves. The peripheral surface of the drum mates with a shoe through which molten lead is directed into the grooves as the drum rotates. The outer periphery of the drum is a shell that is connected to rotary side plates by means of roll pins that enable the shell as a whole to expand and contract independently of the side plates. The drum is maintained at a desired temperature to solidify the molten lead directed into the grooves of the battery grid pattern by circulating a heated liquid through the drum.
