  • Patent number: 8140706
Abstract: Techniques for determining user types based on multi-modal clustering are provided. The topology, content and usage of a document collection or web site is determined. The user paths are identified using longest repeating subsequence techniques and a multi-modal information need vector is determined for each significant user path. Multi-modal vectors for each document in the significant path, content, uniform resource locators, inlink and outlink multi-modal vectors are determined and combined based on path position and access frequency. Multi-modal clustering is performed based on a multi-modal similarity function and a specified measure of similarity using a type of multi-modal clustering such as K-means or wavefront clustering. The identified clusters may be further analyzed based on changes to the weighting of the corresponding content, url, inlinks and outlinks multi-modal feature vectors.

  • Patent number: 8139874
Abstract: An image data storage system and associated method store, on one or more disk drives in a disk drive array, original image data for different images as well as multiple resolution levels of compressed image data for each image. The lowest resolution level image data for multiple different images (i.e., “thumbnail” copies of images) are grouped together and stored within sectors closest to the center. The progressively higher resolution levels of image data for the same images can similarly be grouped together and stored within sectors sequentially from a first track closest to the center to a last track closet to an outer edge. Alternatively, all higher resolution levels of image data for any single image can be grouped together and stored within a same sector as close to the center as possible. This organization can significantly reduce average access time for large collections of images.

  • Patent number: 8137879
Abstract: A toner including stabilized magnetic single-crystal nanoparticles, wherein the value of the magnetic anisotropy of the magnetic nanoparticles is greater than or equal to 2×104 J/m3. The magnetic nanoparticle may be a ferromagnetic nanoparticle, such as FePt. The toner includes a magnetic material that minimizes the size of the particle, resulting in excellent magnetic pigment dispersion and dispersion stability, particularly in emulsion/aggregation toner processes. The smaller sized magnetic particles of the toner also maintains excellent magnetic properties, thereby reducing the amount of magnetic particle loading required in the toner.

  • Patent number: 8140326
Abstract: An audio privacy system reduces the intelligibility of speech in an audio signal while preserving prosodic information, such as pitch, relative energy and intonation so that a listener has the ability to recognize environmental sounds but not the speech itself. An audio signal is processed to separate non-vocalic information, such as pitch and relative energy of speech, from vocalic regions, after which syllables are identified within the vocalic regions. Representations of the vocalic regions are computed to produce a vocal tract transfer function and an excitation. The vocal tract transfer function for each syllable is then replaced with the vocal tract transfer function from another prerecorded vocalic sound. In one aspect, the identity of the replacement vocalic sound is independent of the identity of the syllable being replaced.

  • Patent number: 8139860
Abstract: In an embodiment of the invention, an electronic document (e-document) can be searched and found by capturing an image of the printed document. Instead of typing in a file name or searching through multiple directories, the user simply takes a picture of the document with a camera and the system uses the document image to locate the e-document. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, an image of a printed document can be useful for remote document sharing. In various embodiments of the invention, sharing an image of a printed document can be used to email a high quality paper document, send a high quality fax, or open a document to a page containing an annotation. Through co-design of the feature extraction and search algorithm in the system, the image feature detection robustness and search speed are improved at the same time.

  • Patent number: 8139848
Abstract: A color signal processing device includes a conversion unit that converts a first color signal into a second color signal. The second color signal is obtained by changing a color point, in a device independent color space, corresponding to a color of each color component of the first color signal by a distance corresponding to a reduction degree so that the color point, in the device independent color space, corresponding to the color of each color component of the first color signal approaches white along a locus, in the device independent color space, corresponding to each color component of the first color signal. The locus, in the device independent color space, corresponding to each color component is obtained by changing an amount of a coloring material that corresponds to each color component and is used in an output device.

  • Patent number: 8139249
Abstract: Systems and methods are described that facilitate importing scanned image data into a production workflow, in accordance with various features described herein. A plurality of loosely-coupled, dynamically loaded plugins can be defined in a configuration file for a given production scanning job. The plugins can be invoked in response to a trigger with which each plugin is associated, and triggers can be associated with different phases of the production workflow, such as image data acquisition (importation), data filtering (pre-scanning), image analysis (scanning), and metadata processing (post-scanning). In this manner, the overarching scanning architecture need not have direct knowledge of which plugins are triggered, or even present, and custom plugins as well as standard plugins can be provided for each production scanning job.
