Abstract: This disclosure describes a provisional hand-off mechanism to transfer handsets between base stations for a MAC protocol that combines contention-free and contention-based MAC protocols for use in wireless VoIP systems with multiple base stations that reduces packet overhead thus allowing for transmission of high bit-rate data to multiple users over wired and wireless means.

Abstract: A technique for network entry in multi-channel mobile systems is described. The procedure utilizes the channel specific information sent in the beacon of each channel to select a subset of suitable channels. It then proceeds to scan these channels to gather information on perceived interference and received signal strength. Based on collected information the device picks the most suitable channel for joining the network. Since the channels to be scanned are pre-selected based on information seen in the beacon, the overall scan latency is reduced, thereby leading to a faster and more successful network entry.

Abstract: A system and method of carrier less modulation is described in this disclosure that uses SAW filters as a modulator in addition to their conventional use as filters for band limiting an UWB system. This system and method is primarily designed to be used with any integer cycle, ultra-wide band or impulse type modulation and more particularly is designed to work with a method of modulation named xMax. Abstract: A receiver synchronization technique is described in this disclosure that significantly reduces the convergence time for synchronization further enabling specially modulated radio frequency carrier waves using the following steps: the characteristics of the baseband signal are used to detect the start of a received burst. Once the presence of a symbol is detected, the data acquisition subsystem is enabled to begin collecting samples. These samples are then transferred to the DSP. The DSP then searches for a preamble to precisely determine the timing delay to the start of the payload data.

Furthermore, since the number of transmitted and received packets is reduced at the mobile device, the battery life of the device can be improved significantly. The proposed method can also be applied to downlink and uplink ACK frames with a slight variation between the two.
