    Abstract: A motion tracker including a head band and laser devices that direct laser beams having non-concentric axes to a charge coupled device is used to determine movement of a patient during a CT scan. When the patient is motionless, the laser devices each direct a laser beam along a line, and the laser beams contact the charge coupled device at a contact location. If the patient moves, the laser devices, and therefore the contact locations, move. The charge coupled device detects the movement of the contact locations to determine the movement of the patient. A computer adjusts the x-ray image taken at the time of the movement to accommodate for this movement.

    Abstract: An imaging system includes a source and a detector that can be quickly and easily moved out of the way after scanning. During scanning, the actual paths that the source and detector travel are tracked, such as by an associated surgical navigation system tracking system. The actual locations of the source and detector during each x-ray image are used in the image reconstruction algorithm. Since the actual locations are used in the algorithm, the locations do not have to be as precisely controlled. In one embodiment, the source and detector are mounted proximate outer ends of first and second c-arm sections. The first and second c-arm sections are extendable to form a complete c-arm and retractable to a collapsed position when not in use. In the disclosed embodiment, the c-arm sections are mounted to a base or carriage under the patient support surface (such as the surgical table).

    Abstract: A method of correcting for motion of a patient during a CT scan includes observing positions of radio-opaque markers in a series of two dimensional x-ray projections taken by a scanner. The markers are positioned on a patient in a fixed and rigid relationship, a CT scan is performed to obtain a three dimensional CT image, and an actual projected position of each of the markers in each two dimensional projection is determined. A motion data set is obtained based on the actual projected positions of the plurality of the markers. A final three dimensional CT image is reconstructed employing the motion data set.

    Abstract: A head holder made of radiolucent material is attached near an end of a table to support a head of a patient during a CT scan. The head holder includes a base portion that supports the shoulders and upper back of the patient and a head rest that supports a patient's head. The head holder is moveable relative to the table in a direction that is generally parallel to a length of the table. A position of the head rest is adjustable in a vertical direction relative to the base portion. The radiolucent material of the head holder does not affect the quality of a resulting CT scan.

The x-ray source projects an x-ray beam towards subject. The x-ray source includes an anode and a cathode, where the anode has a target for directing the x-ray beam. A two-dimensional sensing array receives an x-ray beam through the subject to generate an image. The target of the anode causes a shift variant blur of the x-ray beam received by the sensing array due to the angle between the target and the sensing array. The controller is in communication with the sensing array to control acquisition and processing of the image. The controller is configured to adjust for the shift variant blur of the x-ray beam.

    Abstract: A first laser device and a second laser device direct a laser beam towards a patient before a CT scan to visually indicate an outer boundary of an area where x-rays will be directed during the CT scan. Each laser device includes a prism that deflects the laser beams to form lines on the patient that define an outer boundary of an area of the patient that will be exposed to the x-rays. If the area of the patient between the lines is not the desired area, the operator can move the patient until the desired area of the patient is located between the lines. A third laser device can direct a laser beam to define an outer boundary that is used to ensure proper orientation of the patient in the space.

The registration appendage is viewable in a CT scan in situations where the locators of the patient tracker are outside of a field of view of the CT scanner.

    Abstract: A CT scanner includes a base, two fixed portions extending transversely from the base, and a rocking beam pivotally attached to the base about an axis. The CT scanner includes four wheels that allow the CT scanner to move over a floor. A wheel is attached to each fixed portion, and a wheel is attached to each end of the rocking beam. If the CT scanner is positioned on a floor with an unlevel portion, the rocking beam rotates about the axis. One wheel attached to the rocking beam raises in a generally vertical direction, and the other beam attached to the rocking beam lowers in a generally vertical direction so all four wheels contact the floor, stabilizing the CT scanner and preventing rocking.

    Abstract: A CT scanner system provides projection-like images of a patient volume. After a CT scan is obtained and a three-dimensional model of the patient is created, any synthetic view can be generated by choosing any array of projection lines, e.g. between a point and a surface (a flat plane, curved plane, spherical, etc) or between two surfaces (parallel or not) and summing across the projection lines. The synthetic projections can mimic certain traditional views, such as a ceph scan, Water's view, Caldwell's projection, etc or can provide a new view that is impossible or impractical with traditional x-ray equipment, such as a perfect parallel projection, or a projection that does not pass all the way through the patient.

The source and detector are mounted opposite one another on an inner circumference of an inner ring. The inner ring is rotatable about the axis within an outer ring mounted on at least one carriage. The carriage is movable parallel to the axis. During scanning, the inner ring rotates within the outer ring while the rings and carriage move along the axis, thereby producing a helical scan of the extremity.

    Abstract: A surgical imaging system includes spaced-apart first and second x-ray sources mounted above a patient support surface. An x-ray detector mounted below the patient support surface generates first x-ray images based upon x-rays from the first x-ray source and second x-ray images based upon x-rays from the second x-ray source. These first and second x-ray images are used to generate a stereofluoroscopic image via a stereo display for a surgeon performing image-guided surgery. The stereofluoroscopic imaging system may be used in conjunction with robotic surgery. A surgical robot operatively controls a surgical tool in an area between the first x-ray source and the x-ray detector, and between the second x-ray source and the x-ray detector. The system may optionally include a first video camera mounted proximate the first x-ray source and a second video camera mounted proximate the second x-ray source.
