Patent number: 6257412Abstract: A cushioning material for packaging is provided, which is used when an article having a rectangular cross section or a cubic shape is packaged in an outer case, such as a corrugated cardboard box. The cushioning material is suitable for packaging the article therewith in an outer case while an end portion, which has a pair of corner sections, of the article is inserted into and supported by the cushioning. The cushioning material is provided with a grooved retainer (1) and a pair of end support members (2,2) disposed so as to close the ends of both end portions of the grooved retainer (1). The grooved retainer has a raised bottom (10) and two side walls (11,11) and is adapted to receive one inserted end portion of the article having a rectangular cross section or a cubic shape. The end support members each have a plurality of hollow portions (20), which are arranged in parallel in a predetermined direction, and a rectangular cross-section orthogonal to the longitudinal direction of the hollow portions (20).Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1999Date of Patent: July 10, 2001Assignees: Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Yokoyama Sankoh Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masahiro Yamamoto, Yoshimasa Yokoyama

Patent number: 6254523Abstract: A method of imparting directional permanency of folding to a sheet, and an apparatus therefor, which is suitable for manufacturing frame bodies, cushioning members and other block products for packaging, from a sheet of paper and other recyclable materials. The method includes a step of moving respective folding working tools, disposed on one or both surfaces of a sheet, required amounts so as to fold the sheet along respective folding ruled lines, and a step of shortening spacings between the respective folding working tools in a uniform ratio in accordance with an apparent amount of shortening in a longitudinal dimension caused by the shifting, while synchronizing with the moving step. Directional permanency of folding can be accurately imparted to the sheet along the folding ruled lines.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1999Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignees: Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Yokoyama Sankoh Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masahiro Yamamoto, Yoshimasa Yokoyama

Patent number: 6199700Abstract: A cushioning material for packaging is formed of a foldable and regenerable sheet, such as a corrugated cardboard or thick paper, and is used to protect an article of a rectangular cross-sectional shape packaged in an outer case. First and third frame members (1a, 1c) for forming a pair of parallel edge members of a rectangular frame, and second and fourth frame members (1b, 1d) for forming the other pair of parallel edge members of the same frame are provided, and the frame members (1a-1d) are formed of hollow bodies having a plurality of hollow portions (10) arranged in parallel, the contour and sizes of cross sections intersecting the hollow portions (10) being substantially equal.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2000Date of Patent: March 13, 2001Assignees: Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Yokoyama Sankoh Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masahiro Yamamoto, Yoshimasa Yokoyama

Patent number: 6190756Abstract: This invention relates to a connected hollow structure and a packaging member suitable for use as a cushioning material, a protection frame material, a core material of a hollow panel and a carrier for carrying adsorbents. A connected hollow structure comprises a large number of hollow structures 10 having an arbitrary sectional shape and connected in parallel to each other. The connected hollow structure is formed from a piece of sheet and takes the shape resembling a unicursal figure in section. It is possible to form a connected hollow structure which shows elasticity and withstanding strength fit for the purpose and also has a smaller apparent specific gravity by properly selecting the quality of a sheet a, and the sectional shape and size of the hollow structures 10.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1997Date of Patent: February 20, 2001Assignees: Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Yokoyama Sankoh Co., LTD, Yoshimasa YokoyamaInventors: Yoshimasa Yokoyama, Masahiro Yamamoto

Patent number: 6132349Abstract: This invention relates to fold line structure of a corrugated fiberboard in which the fold lines have a shape like the letter V, along which the corrugated fiberboard sheet is folded. The fold lines extend perpendicularly to or at an angle other than a right angle to the flutes. Each fold line is composed of cuts, each of which has a predetermined length and penetrates the corrugated fiberboard sheet, and hinge portions, each of which has a predetermined length and is formed by compressing the flutes, with the cuts and the hinge portions aligned in an alternating arrangement. Auxiliary cuts each have a planar shape approximating an one-sided arrow directed toward the adjacent hinge portion, penetrate the corrugated fiberboard sheet, and are formed on opposing sides at both ends of each cut portion.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1998Date of Patent: October 17, 2000Assignees: Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Yokoyama Sankoh Co., Ltd.Inventor: Yoshimasa Yokoyama

Patent number: 6129655Abstract: A method by which a sheet, formed with peak and valley folds which are parallel and alternate, can be rapidly and smoothly folded and shaped, and an apparatus therefor. The method includes supplying a sheet in a naturally relaxed state onto a support guide, and applying a light pressing pressure on the sheet in a direction by which the angles between the folds are increased by means of a pressing guide. The pressing guide moves toward a support surface of the support guide when a pair of bending tools begin to apply a bending pressure to the sheet to correctly and smoothly fold and shape the sheet along the respective folds.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1999Date of Patent: October 10, 2000Assignees: Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Yokoyama Sankoh Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masahiro Yamamoto, Yoshimasa Yokoyama

Patent number: 5750235Abstract: A base board for a layered corrugated fiberboard structure comprises a corrugated fiberboard material including a corrugating medium having flutes, first folds along which the corrugated fiberboard material is folded in the shape of the inverted letter V, and second folds along which the corrugated fiberboard material is folded in the shape of the letter V, and the first folds and the second folds are formed in the corrugated fiberboard material in parallel to each other and in an alternate arrangement so as to extend perpendicularly or at an angle other than a right angle to the flutes. The second folds are lines of perforations, and portions of the corrugated fiberboard material that forms an outer surface when folded are incised along the lines of perforations.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1996Date of Patent: May 12, 1998Assignees: Yokoyama Sankoh Co., Ltd., Hitachi Zosen CorporationInventor: Yokoyama Yoshimasa
