  • Patent number: 5168962
Abstract: A brake shoe includes a mounting portion at its rear side. The mounting portion is angularly adjustable relative to a brake arm. An angular position adjusting member is removably fit in at least the rear end of a shoe body in the direction of rotation of a wheel. The angular position adjusting member and one end of a braking surface are pressed against a wheel rim. After the mounting portion is fixed to the brake arm, the angular position adjusting member is removed. This enables adjustment of a clearance between the wheel rim and the brake shoe.

  • Patent number: 5103938
Abstract: A pair of inwardly projecting right and left mounting brackets are mounted on a fork carrying a wheel and a cantilever is pivotally carried on the inner end of each mounting bracket by a pivot shaft, with a brake shoe mounted on each cantilever. The mounting bracket is freely displaceable between an inwardly projected position and an outward withdrawn position. This device thus prevents outward projection of the cantilevers while ensuring a reliable braking with a smaller operating force. It also facilitates fitting and removal of the wheel.

  • Patent number: 5062315
Abstract: In connecting an operating lever to the inner wire of a Bowden cable, a nipple is secured to one end of said inner wire, and on the other hand, a connector, in which a locking hole for engaging said nipple is formed, is supported within said operating lever so that the nipple of said inner wire engages the locking hole of said connector. Also, a ring body which presses the top surface of the nipple is attached to the circumferential surface of said connector to restrain said nipple within the locking hole of said connector. Said ring body prevents the nipple from unexpectedly projecting or falling from the connector as a result of elongation, etc. of the inner wire. The ring body has a handle-shaped pickup portion with a slot-shaped tool opening and is carried solely by the connector hidden within the operating lever.

  • Patent number: 5058450
Abstract: A pair of arms provided with brake shoes is mounted onto a cycle body via a mounting plate, so as to be freely rotatable, and an adjustment metal is installed between a shaft on the mounting plate and a bossed section of one arm, one edge of said adjustment metal being engaged onto the bossed section and the other edge being indirectly connected to the aforementioned shaft. The return spring tension can be strengthened or weakened by rotation of this adjustment metal from outside. The clamping protrusions on the adjustment metal are made to engage onto the ratchets on the stop ring by strong pressure from a spring element.

  • Patent number: 4838387
Abstract: Each of a pair of brakes arms has a boss portion formed with a cavity around a pivot on an arm bracket for supporting the brake arms on the body of a bicycle. A pair of return springs for biasing the brake arms toward or away from each other for braking each have a coil portion provided around the pivot and accommodated in the cavity. The return spring has one end fixedly engaged in the boss portion and the other end fixedly engaged in a spring adjusting member which is supported by the pivot and rotatable only in the coil portion winding direction. Thus, each return spring is protected from corrosion, made smoothly operable for the desired braking action and readily adjustable by turning the adjusting member.

  • Patent number: 4838386
Abstract: A side-pull caliper brake device comprising an arch support pivot, a first arch and a second arch rotatably supported by the pivot, first and second return springs each in the form of a coil and fitted around the pivot for biasing the first and second arches away from each other, and a Bowden cable for moving the arches toward or away from each other. The first spring has one end engaged with the pivot and the other end engaged with the first arch. The second spring has one end engaged with the second arch and the other end engaged with an adjusting ring rotatably mounted on the pivot. The adjusting ring is prevented from rotating relative to the pivot by a fastening nut. The force of the return springs is adjustable by rotating the adjusting ring. The springs are engaged in place without sliding and therefore smoothly bias the first and second arches. The springs, which are provided around the pivot and enclosed in the cavities, are free of deposition of mud or the like and protected from corrosion.

  • Patent number: 3997030
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for use with a bicycle brake system consisting of brake means including a housing secured to a handle bar, and a brake operating lever grippably secured to said housing; brake means for braking a wheel; and a Bowden cable for transmitting a gripping force on the brake operating lever in a direction in which the brake means acts to apply the brakes, said Bowden cable consisting of an inner cable and an outer sheath which operatively interconnect the brake means and the brake operating means, said device being arranged so that when gripping the brake operating lever to a predetermined extent fails to fully exert the intended braking action due, for example, to wear of the brake shoes and/or elongation of the Bowden cable, such decrease in or lack of the braking action is automatically compensated by utilizing the gripping action on the brake operating lever. The automatic adjusting device described above is substantially installed in the brake operating means.
