    Abstract: A lead-acid storage battery includes a connecting terminal assembly which comprises: a bushing made from lead or lead alloy, buried in a cover of the battery in the same process as when the cover is molded, and including a hole into which a pole is fitted; and a connecting terminal made by press working of metal, except for lead or lead alloy, having a good electrical conductivity, having at least one bolt-insertion hole and a space for accommodating a nut, fixed to the upper portion of the bushing, and having a strength resistive to a torque of 40 kg-cm or more caused by a bolt inserted into the bolt-insertion hole.

The positive electroconductive material has a rugged part consisting of longitudinally extending concave and convex portions, which are formed by compression molding, at the inner surface thereof.

    Abstract: A sodium-sulfur storage battery comprises an alpha alumina ring, a sodium conductive solid electrolyte tube and solder glass jointing said ring and said tube together; and is characterized in that the alpha alumina ring is provided at its open end with a groove for collecting the solder glass, a width of said groove is in a range from 0.2 mm to 5 mm and a depth of said groove is in a range from 0.2 mm to 10 mm. A surface of the solder glass is formed at a position inner than an end surface of the alpha alumina ring. Said groove may have a section of a rectangular shape. An inside surface of said groove may have a section of a round shape or an oblique section.

    Abstract: A manufacturing method of a sodium-sulfur storage battery wherein a negative cover is thermocompressively jointed to an upper surface of an alpha alumina ring which are jointed with solder glass to a solid electrolyte tube, and a positive cover is thermocompressively jointed to a lower surface of said alpha alumina ring, is characterized in that diffusion layers of chrome are provided on the surfaces of the negative and positive covers, coating layers of aluminum are provided at least on the surfaces, which are thermocompressively jointed, of the negative and positive covers, and thermocompressively jointing surfaces are thermocompressively jointed in the air with aluminum rings thereon, respectively. Said negative and positive covers may be made from stainless steel, iron or alloy of iron and nickel. Said chrome diffusion layers may be about 20.mu.-120.mu. in thickness, respectively, and said aluminum layers may be about 5.mu.-90.mu. in thickness, respectively.

    Abstract: The present disclosure describes a sodium-sulfur storage battery comprising a sodium-ion conductive solid electrolyte tube; a positive electroconductive material consisting of graphite felt or carbon felt, and a metal sulfide layer disposed between the solid electrolyte tube and the positive electro-conductive material. Said metal sulfide layer may be sulfurated metal such as aluminum, nickel, copper, iron, tin, zinc, lead, magnesium and chrome. A metal member may be disposed between the solid electrolyte tube and the positive electroconductive material to form said metal sulfide layer by a sulfurated part formed at least at the surface of said metal member.

According to the invention, thicknesses of the metallic members thermocompressively jointed to upper and lower surfaces of said .alpha.-alumina ring is in a range from about 0.2 mm to about 0.6 mm. Plate-shaped aluminum rings are disposed between said .alpha.-alumina ring and said metallic members respectively and are thermocompressively jointed in air under condition of a temperature in a range from about 600.degree. to about 625.degree. C. and a pressure in a range from about 1200 to about 1600 kg/cm.sup.2.

    Abstract: A novel process for the production of a separator for use in a cell to prevent the short-circuiting of positive active material and negative active material comprises irradiating a polyolefin film 150 .mu.m or less thick with ionizing radiation at a dose rate of 5.times.10.sup.4 -10.sup.7 rads/sec. to give a total dose of 1 Mrad or more, contacting the irradiated film with an aqueous solution of a terminally unsaturated monomer such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and the like at a temperature of 10.degree. C.-60.degree. C. to thereby cause grafting of the monomer onto the polyolefin film before the grafted polymer film is treated with an aqueous alkaline solution to finally obtain the separator for use in a cell, which is substantially improved in that it shows low electrical resistance and is excellent both in its acid resistance and mechanical strength.

    Abstract: A battery separator composed of a composite sheet of film to which a monomer having a hydrophilic or electrolytic group is grafted is disclosed. Said film consists of a first polymeric layer containing a substance capable of catching a metal ion dissolved from a positive or negative active material and a second polymeric layer integrally bonded to either one or both sides of the first polymeric layer and which contains no such substance or contains it in a smaller amount that that contained in said first polymeric layer. Also disclosed is a method of producing a battery separator by irradiating such composite sheet of film with ionizing radiation and immersing the irradiated film in a solution of a monomer containing a hydrophilic or electrolytic group or bringing it into contact with the monomer solution to thereby graft the monomer to the film.
