  • Patent number: 4619150
Abstract: A sliding gear for a speed-changing transmission, idling on an output shaft, has a set of external running teeth in permanent mesh with a driving gear and a set of internal clutch teeth engageable with mating teeth on a coupling member carried by that shaft. The two sets of teeth have centerlines inclined to the axial direction by angles so related as to exert balanced axial forces upon the sliding gear in the engaged position of the latter. The clutch teeth have flanks diverging from their centerlines at small angles, in the direction of the engagement shift, to hold the sliding gear in contact with the coupling member.

  • Patent number: 4616520
Abstract: An axially segmented brake arrangement in a hub-shaped planetary gear wheel head for a driven axle has a sleeve which couples the two central shaft sections nonrotatably together so that the sun wheel section can be replaced or be interchangeable to enable sun wheels of different diameters to be used even once the brake has been assembled. The sleeve which serves this function is connected by a web to a rim or spur gear located radially outwardly of the sleeve at the level of the planet gear shaft, this spur gear carrying the internally toothed brake disks of a stack of such disks interleaved with externally toothed disks engaging an internally toothed hollow shaft meshing with the planet gears, surrounding the brake disk stack and carried by a hollow shaft carrier which receives the power assist mechanism for the brake and is mounted on a hollow axle extending into the hub forming housing which is connected to the planet carrier.

  • Patent number: 4553653
Abstract: A rapid-torque clutch/brake assembly has a hub secured to the driven shaft and connected to an axially displaceable ring by a pair of spring rings which flank interdigitating arms of the axially displaceable ring and the hub. An electromagnetic coil can be energized to selectively shift the axially displaceable ring into engagement with a clutch ring coupling the shaft to a driving element such as a pulley, or into engagement with a brake ring connected to a housing for braking rotation of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4485443
Abstract: A system for controlling the torque to be transmitted by a fluid-operated friction coupling (clutch or brake) in an automatic speed changer comprises a processor which receives readings of the rotary speeds of an input member and an output member to be interengaged by that coupling and calculates the instantaneous relative angular acceleration .alpha.=-d.vertline..DELTA.n.vertline./dt from these data, the value .alpha. being supplied to a comparator. A computer receiving the same readings determines the optimum acceleration and feeds the result to the comparator whose output actuates a governor controlling the fluid pressure supplied to the coupling.

  • Patent number: 4482025
Abstract: A steered and driven axle-end assembly has a steering knuckle whose inside and outside halves are pivotal about an upright pivot axis. An axle extends into the inside knuckle half and is connected to the inner side of a universal joint whose outer side is connected to one end of a gear train whose other end is connected to a wheel support which is rotatable about a horizontal wheel axis on the outside knuckle half. A pair of roller bearings centered on the wheel axis are spaced axially apart therealong by a spacing which is equal to at most half of the axial distance through which the outside knuckle half extends into the wheel support. Thus the outside knuckle half and associated structure can pivot through a considerable angle relative to the inside knuckle half for minimum turning radius of a vehicle embodying the axle-end assembly.

The shaft bears a mechanical wave generator which deforms the middle portion of the cup wall into an elliptical cross-section, whereby splines on opposite sides of the cup wall are shifted to mesh with inwardly projecting teeth of a pair of rings, one ring having teeth greater in number than the splines and being attached to a motion-output component rotatably and slidably secured to the cup casing. The supports in the cup are tapered to a minimum diameter at their inner ends substantially equal to the minor axis of the elliptical cross-section.

  • Patent number: 4475639
Abstract: A driving gear having external teeth in mesh with internal teeth of a sliding sleeve, adapted to be axially shifted into meshing engagement with external teeth of a driven gear coaxially adjoining the driving gear, carries several peripherally spaced rockers which project radially into axially extending inner peripheral guide grooves of the sleeve. A synchro ring coaxial with the two gears is rotationally entrained by the driving gear, through the intermediary of the rockers thereof, and has a clutch surface confronting a similar surface of the driven gear across a narrow clearance which closes when the ring, under an axial thrust from the rockers in response to an incipient coupling shift of the sleeve, is moved toward the driven gear.

A synchro ring coaxial with the two gears is limitedly rotatable relatively to the driving gear and has a clutch surface confronting a similar surface of the driven gear through a narrow clearance which closes when the ring, under an axial thrust from the detent members, is moved toward the driven gear by an incipient coupling shift of the sleeve.
