    Abstract: A method is disclosed for generating a voice-activated responsive action, such as a pulse or a measurement, with improved speed and time resolution. First, an operator calls an arming command to prepare the application, and then calls a trigger command to initiate the responsive action. The responsive action is generated immediately upon detecting the leading edge of the trigger command, resulting in an extremely fast response with precise timing. The particular responsive action may be determined by the type of sound detected, or by other information contained in the trigger command, or by the arming command, or by another prior command. Other types of preparatory events are disclosed. Efficient methods for identifying commands are disclosed. For all applications requiring an extremely prompt, precisely timed, hands-free response to a voice command, this invention is enabling.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for discriminating voiced and unvoiced sounds in speech. The method detects characteristic waveform features of voiced and unvoiced sounds, by applying integral and differential functions to the digitized sound signal in the time domain. Laboratory tests demonstrate extremely high reliability in separating voiced and unvoiced sounds. The method is very fast and computationally efficient. The method enables voice activation in resource-limited and battery-limited devices, including mobile devices, wearable devices, and embedded controllers. The method also enables reliable command identification in applications that recognize only predetermined commands. The method is suitable as a pre-processor for natural language speech interpretation, improving recognition and responsiveness. The method enables realtime coding or compression of speech according to the sound type, improving transmission efficiency.

    Abstract: When a voice-activated device or application is first started, the signal levels corresponding to spoken commands are initially unknown, making it difficult to set detection thresholds. The inventive method provides an initial command-detection threshold based on the noise level alone. The first command is detected using this initial threshold. Then the threshold is revised according to the first command sound, and a second command is detected using the revised threshold. After detecting each command, the detection threshold is further refined according to the current noise and command sounds. Methods are also disclosed for optimizing the thresholds, adjusting parameters according to sound, and detecting voiced and unvoiced sounds separately. These capabilities enable many emerging voice-activated products and applications.

The device receives voice commands directly through an internal microphone, or through a detachable headset, and confirms each command with an acoustical signal in the headset.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for identifying a spoken command by detecting intervals of voiced and unvoiced sound, and then comparing the order of voiced and unvoiced sounds to a set of templates. Each template represents one of the predetermined acceptable commands of the application, and is associated with a predetermined action. When the order of voiced and unvoiced intervals in the spoken command matches the order in one of the templates, the associated action is thus selected. Silent intervals in the command may also be included for enhanced recognition. Efficient protocols are disclosed for discriminating voiced and unvoiced sounds, and for detecting the beginning and ending of each sound interval in the command, and for comparing the command sequence to the templates. In a sparse-command application, this method provides fast and robust recognition, and can be implemented with low-cost hardware and extremely minimal software.

Also disclosed are fast, compact, robust algorithms for analyzing spoken commands, and particularly for detecting voiced and unvoiced sound, and for identifying commands by comparing the order of sound intervals in the spoken command to templates that represent the predetermined commands. The device may have one output or multiple outputs in parallel, all controlled by voice commands with precision output timing.
