Publication number: 20070138120Abstract: A railroad car coupler centering device including in one embodiment a spreader beam mountable to the striker at one end of a railroad car, a right side centering spring rotatably connected to the spreader beam by a hinge, and a left side centering spring rotatably connected to the spreader beam by a hinge. The first or right side centering spring is moveable to and between a coupler engaged position and a coupler disengaged position. In the coupler engaged position, the right side centering spring is positioned to engage the right side of the coupler and to bias the coupler to a central position. In the coupler disengaged position, the right side centering spring allows the coupler to move from the center position to the right. Similarly, the left side centering spring is moveable to and between a coupler engaged position and a coupler disengaged position.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2006Publication date: June 21, 2007Applicant: ZefTek, Inc.Inventors: John Anderson, Walter Peach

Patent number: 7150592Abstract: A supplemental restraint for a primary vehicle restraint system for an auto-rack railroad car which reduces or eliminates movement of the vehicle in the auto-rack railroad car. The supplemental restraint is adapted to be positioned on a grating between the tire of the vehicle and the primary restraint. One embodiment of the supplemental restraint includes a body and an expander connected to the body. After the primary restraint is locked in place on the grating, the expander of the supplemental restraint is expanded. The expansion causes a more secure engagement between the tire and the primary restraint. This causes a high level of engagement between the tire and the primary restraint system indirectly through the supplemental restraint. The supplemental restraint also maintains a higher contact area on the tire regardless of the position of the primary restraint.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2005Date of Patent: December 19, 2006Assignee: ZefTek, Inc.Inventors: John D. Anderson, Walter J. Peach, Michael K. Burke

Patent number: 6964233Abstract: A beam isolator which is inserted into at least one end of a tubular beam in a railroad car to minimize the movement of the beam during movement of the railroad car. The beam isolator includes first and second isolating pads, each defining openings. A hinge connects the first and second isolating pads at a first end of said first and second isolating pads. A stopping member is attached to and transversely projects from a second end of the first and second isolating pads. The first and second isolating pads are closed or folded about the hinge until the first and second isolating pads are substantially adjacent to each other, which substantially aligns the openings defined by the first and second isolating pads. The beam isolator is then inserted into at least one end of the beam until the stopping members engage the edges of the end of the beam.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2004Date of Patent: November 15, 2005Assignee: ZefTek, Inc.Inventors: Walter J. Patent number: 6561740Abstract: The present invention reveals an auto rack sidewall panel bumper guard for auto rack railroad cars which eliminates contact between the vehicle door and the sidewall panel even in extreme heat. The bumper guard includes a pair of opposed mounting bases, a pair of extension arms connected to the mounting bases and a contact member connected to the arms opposite the mounting bases. The contact member has a lesser thickness than the arms to absorb the forces of the vehicle door.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2001Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: ZefTek, Inc.Inventors: Michael K. Patent number: 6527311Abstract: The present invention reveals a lubricant-free door lock for railroad cars and particularly auto rack railroad cars, which eliminates the need to use grease or other lubricants to lubricate the door locks. The lubricant-free door lock generally includes a stainless steel cylindrical tube or housing and a cylindrical replaceable plastic bushing mounted in the housing the prevent the steel-on-steel contact between a locking pin and the inner walls of the housing. A washer or plate connected to the bottom end of the housing maintains the bushing in the housing. The door lock also includes a spring mounted in the housing between the bushing and an end cap positioned over the locking pin. A stop extends transversely through the housing, end cap and locking pin to limit the movement of the locking pin. The bushing eliminates the need for a lubricant between the steel locking pin and the steel inner walls of the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2001Date of Patent: March 4, 2003Assignee: ZefTek, Inc.Inventors: Michael K. Burke, Walter J. Peach, Jake C. Pedersen

Patent number: 6296135Abstract: A vent-on-demand hatch cover for closing a hatch opening of a compartment in a railcar, and particularly a hopper car, wherein the car is provided with a coaming that defines the opening. The cover includes a peripheral opening for taking in the outside air and which is disposed adjacent the outer side of the coaming and an inside opening at the underside of the cover exposed to the compartment for connecting the cover to the compartment air. Passageways are provided between the two openings in order to allow air flow between the outside of the car and the inside of the car. A closure member is provided at the inside opening of the cover which is resiliently biased normally into closed position and which opens upon the formation of a vacuum within the compartment in order to allow unloading of the compartment.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1999Date of Patent: October 2, 2001Assignee: ZefTek, Inc.Inventors: John D. Anderson, Walter J. Peach, Jr.
