Abstract: The invention provides a method for treating textile material to inhibit or reduce release of formaldehyde from the textile material. The invention also provides a method for treating textile material without the use of formaldehyde or formaldehydic compounds in the treatment compositions. The resulting textile material is environmentally friendly and can exhibit a high degree of oleophobic, hydrophobic, superoleophobic, superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic, omniphobic, hydrophilic/wicking, abrasion resistance, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, anti-fungal and/or anti-bacterial properties textile surfaces. In some cases, the resulting textile material exhibits multivalued oleophobic, hydrophobic, hydrophilic, superoleophobic, superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic and/or omniphobic textile surfaces which can repel soil and/or water at extremely low-surface-tension without sacrificing aesthetic qualities.
