Patent number: 10426538Abstract: A spinal stabilization system may be formed in a patient. In some embodiments, a minimally invasive procedure may be used to form a spinal stabilization system in a patient. Bone fastener assemblies may be coupled to vertebrae. Each bone fastener assembly may include a bone fastener and a collar. Extenders may be coupled to the collar to allow for formation of the spinal stabilization system through a small skin incision. The extenders may allow for alignment of the collars to facilitate insertion of an elongated member in the collars. An elongated member may be positioned in the collars and a closure member may be used to secure the elongated member to the collars. An adjuster may be used in conjunction with the extenders to change a separation distance between the bone fastener assemblies.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2017Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: Zimmer Spine, Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Patent number: 10426537Abstract: A method and instrument for tensioning a flexible tie used for fastening an implant on a bony element by forming a first loop around it. In some embodiments, the instrument comprises a shaft having a distal end configured for contact with a rod, a moving part slidably engaged with the shaft, a holder connected to the moving part and configured to hold an end of the flexible tie, and a tension control member comprising a trigger that pivots relative to the moving part. In some embodiments, the method comprises coupling the end of the flexible tie to the instrument and squeezing the trigger to shorten the first loop of the flexible tie around the bony element, causing the moving part and the holder holding the end of the flexible tie to move in translation away from the distal end of the shaft, thereby exerting tension on the flexible tie.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2018Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: Zimmer Spine, S.A.S.Inventors: Christian Baccelli, Regis Le Couedic, Keyvan Mazda

Patent number: 10426624Abstract: Methods and systems include a patient specific instrument for installing a glenosphere within a joint. For example, a method for implanting a glenosphere includes installing first and second pins in a glenoid cavity using a patient specific instrument that sets a distance between the guide pins, installing an implant at the location of the second guide pin, and guiding a glenosphere onto the implant using a helper connected to the first pin. In another example, a glenosphere helper includes a cup shaped body having an interior surface for engaging at least a portion of an outer surface of the glenosphere, and a flange extending from the cup to receive a guide pin at a point, the flange extending from the cup shaped body such that the point is positioned outside a periphery of the glenosphere.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2016Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: William Van Kampen, Steve Dunstan, Jean-Sebastien Merette, Anselm Jakob Neurohr

Patent number: 10427235Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for manufacturing an orthopedic prosthesis by resistance welding a porous metal layer of the orthopedic prosthesis onto an underlying metal substrate of the orthopedic prosthesis. The resistance welding process involves directing an electrical current through the porous layer and the substrate, which dissipates as heat to cause softening and/or melting of the materials, especially along the interface between the porous layer and the substrate. The softened and/or melted materials undergo metallurgical bonding at points of contact between the porous layer and the substrate to fixedly secure the porous layer onto the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2013Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: Joseph R. Patent number: 10426465Abstract: A device for deploying a staple into desired bone has a staple cartridge for retaining a bone staple and a spring-loaded plunger shaft having a distal end proximal to the bone staple, the plunger shaft being retained in a proximal orientation by a latch. Squeezing a trigger releases the latch, so that the plunger shaft moves to its distal position, striking the staple and deploying the staple distally into a bone site. An additional method step, in the event that one wishes to deploy a differently sized staple, involves detaching the staple cartridge from the device and attaching a differently-sized staple cartridge to the device.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2015Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventor: Russell W. Patent number: 10413415Abstract: An orthopaedic tibial prosthesis includes a tibial baseplate sized and shaped to cover substantially all of a resected proximal tibial surface, and a tibial bearing component sized to leave a posteromedial portion of the tibial baseplate exposed when the tibial bearing component is mounted to the baseplate. The exposed posteromedial portion of the tibial baseplate includes a chamfered profile which cooperates with a correspondingly chamfered profile at a posteromedial edge of the tibial bearing component to create a substantially continuous chamfer extending from the resected tibial surface to the medial articular surface of the tibial bearing component. Advantageously, this chamfer leaves an absence of material (i.e., a relief or void) at the posteromedial edge of the tibial prosthesis, thereby enabling deep flexion of the prosthesis without impingement between the tibial prosthesis and adjacent anatomic tissues or prosthetic structures.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2017Date of Patent: September 17, 2019Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: Raymond C. Parisi, Katherine M. Rettig, Jeff Blaylock

Patent number: 10391593Abstract: A plurality of individual medical devices is created that define a medical device family. Within the family of medical devices, each of the plurality of medical devices has at least one dimension that, within an acceptable tolerance, is substantially equal to the same dimension of another of the plurality of medical devices. Thus, for each medical device in the family, another, corresponding medical device has at least one substantially similar dimension. For example, a first medical device may have a first value for a dimension and a second medical device may have a second value for the same dimension that is equal to one of the sum of the second dimension and the acceptable tolerance or the difference between the second dimension and the acceptable tolerance. Thus, each of the plurality of medical devices varies from another of the plurality of medical devices by the acceptable tolerance.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2017Date of Patent: August 27, 2019Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: Adam H. Sanford, Dean M. Acker, Jeffrey D. Brown, Brian D. Earl, John E. Pendleton
