Patent number: 7837223Abstract: Inflatable devices principally for vehicle occupant protection are addressed. Included among the devices are curtains or other cushions (18) with braided portions (42) along their lower edges (30) designed to form semi-rigid members when deployed. Unlike commercially-available vehicle curtains, inflation occurs from the bottom (where the semi-rigid member is formed) upward. The devices additionally optionally may include inflatable nodes (46) within the curtains (18) or otherwise extending from the cushions.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2005Date of Patent: November 23, 2010Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventors: David M. Patent number: 7753401Abstract: Certain aspects and embodiments of the present invention provide an airbag case at least partly made from a relatively flexible material. The flexible material can be configured to provide the airbag components with the ability to connect to the vehicle and provide a channel to guide the flexible membrane upon expansion. In some embodiments, the airbag case includes a pocket formed from the folded flexible material. The pocket may receive a gas generator and a bag and attached to a cover or dashboard and the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2007Date of Patent: July 13, 2010Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventors: Hervé Matura, Benoit Bouquier

Patent number: 7740274Abstract: Certain aspects and embodiments of the present invention provide an airbag having a vent that can adaptively release gas from the airbag upon impact with an occupant. The vent may include a membrane and/or diaphragm that can control the amount of gas released from the airbag based on the pressure in the airbag. During a collision, the airbag can be filled with gas and absorb the energy from an occupant causing the pressure in the airbag to increase. The adaptive vent can release gas from the airbag by opening when the occupant impacts the airbag. In some embodiments, the size of the vents changes depending on the pressure existing in the airbag.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2007Date of Patent: June 22, 2010Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventor: Xavier Manssart

Patent number: 7681917Abstract: Highly-deformable sealing strips integrating with fabric assemblies (principally of airbags) are detailed. The strips reduce gas leakage from occurring. They also function as mechanical reinforcements of the assemblies.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2006Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventors: Jean Roger Guillo, Sophie Roland, Francois Jeanne, Jean Francois Lecoeuvre, Jean Marc Obadia, Benoit Bouquier

Patent number: 7648167Abstract: Inflatable devices such as airbags are detailed. The bags may be formed of components well nested on linear rolls of material, reducing material wastage. The airbags additionally may, in some cases, be formed of components lacking curved surfaces; in certain cases the bag components additionally may have complementary surfaces that, although formed of straight segments, resemble convex and concave shapes.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2006Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventors: Benoit Bouquier, Xavier Manssart, Isabel Vercher, Jean-Marc Obadia, Aline Landry

Patent number: 7188567Abstract: A gas generator (24; 140) may be used in an inflatable member system (20) which includes an inflatable member (22) expandable from a stowed condition to a deployed condition. The generator may include a flexible container (30; 150) within the inflatable member, a gas generant (28; 148), initially located within the flexible container, and an initiator (34). A propagating member (60; 142) may be located within the container to permit the initiator to initiate the generant upon triggering of the initiator to inflate the inflatable member from stowed to deployed conditions. A sustainer (44; 152; 156) may be provided to sustain the gas generation and may be positioned within a generator housing upstream of the propagating member or at or adjacent the downstream end of the propagating member.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2000Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventors: John R. Patent number: 7162958Abstract: An inflator includes a distributed charge to be distributed within an inflatable component of an inflatable system and a housing. The housing includes a combustion chamber and a gas storage chamber. The combustion chamber includes an initiator and a gas propellant. The gas storage chamber includes an inert gas at a high pressure. The housing also includes a gas nozzle. The distributed charge is connected to the housing through the gas nozzle. The distributed charge may be mechanically joined to the housing by a ferrule. Upon receiving an electrical signal from a crash sensor or other activator, the initiator ignites the gas propellant in the combustion chamber. The hot gas and hot particles from the burning gas propellant and the initiator flow into the gas storage chamber and heat the compressed inert gas in the gas storage chamber. The heated, compressed gas in the gas storage chamber flows through the gas nozzle and ignites the distributed charge.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2002Date of Patent: January 16, 2007Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventors: David Shilliday, Gregory J. Patent number: 7137341Abstract: An inflatable system includes an inflatable component and an distributed charge inflator disposed in the inflatable component. The distributed charge inflator includes a first charge for generating inflating gas and a housing body connected to the first charge. The housing body includes an initiator and a second charge that has relatively long burn time. Upon receiving a signal from a sensor, the initiator ignites the first charge and the second charge simultaneously. The first charge inflates the inflatable component and the second charge sustains the inflation of the inflatable component.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2003Date of Patent: November 21, 2006Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventors: David Shilliday, Gregory J. Scaven, Kevin Fitzgerald

Patent number: 6715786Abstract: A fabric valve is disclosed that is made of a fabric blank folded in a pattern that promotes the flow of fluid in one direction along an axis of the fabric valve but restricts the flow in the opposite direction along the same axis. The fabric valve is easy to construct and is made by a series of folds. The fabric valve may be particularly suitable for use with inflatable safety devices used in vehicles, such as air bags and air curtains, to restrict backflow of gas from a given air bag when pressure, is applied to the bag. A method of making the fabric valve and a system incorporating the fabric valve are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2001Date of Patent: April 6, 2004Assignee: Zodiac Automotive US Inc.Inventor: Douglas D.
