    Abstract: A method of removing heat from an electrical machine located in a gas turbine engine at least partially inward of a core airflow path in a radial direction, the electrical machine including an outer generator stator and an inner generator rotor is provided. The method includes directing cooling airflow radially through an airflow passageway to an enclosure at least partially defined by a thermal shield at least partially around the electrical machine. The cooling airflow is directed radially inward past the outer generator stator and toward the inner generator rotor using a cooling manifold thereby removing heat from the generator rotor.

A controller is configured to supply current to the first converter (e.g., from an AC power source) and enable a short circuit state of the first converter by controlling semiconductor switches of the first converter to create at least one short circuit path through the first converter that carries the supplied current. Once an emergency need for diversion is detected, the system and method generates a list of alternative airports the plane can reach given: (i) the current conditions of the plane; (ii) a real-emergency time simulation of evolving conditions of the plane; (iii) the environment at potential landing sites; and (iv) the environment on the flight path to those sites. For airports potentially within reach, the system and method provides a confidence scores for successful landings for alternative simulated landing options. The simulations and confidence scores take into account aircraft position, altitude, speed, and possible further problems with the aircraft for the both the current flight path and for each simulated alternative.

The device includes a wrap having a central portion with a tip wing, a first side wing, and a second side wing each extending therefrom. The wrap has an exterior side and an opposite finger side that faces towards the finger. An electronics system is coupled to the wrap and has a sensor configured to acquire the data from the finger. An adhesive is configured to adhere the sensing device to the finger. First and second attachment portions are positioned on finger side of the first side wing and on the exterior side of the second side wing, respectively, where the first and second attachment portions removably attach to each other to non-adhesively secure the wrap around the finger.
