  • Patent number: 7369361
Abstract: A method of manufacturing magnetic heads comprises the step of: fabricating a magnetic head substructure by forming components of a plurality of magnetic heads on a single substrate, wherein a plurality of rows of pre-head portions that will be the respective magnetic heads later are aligned in the substructure; and fabricating the magnetic heads by separating the pre-head portions from one another through cutting the substructure. In the substructure first resistor elements and second resistor elements are formed. Each of the first resistor elements has a resistance that varies depending on the location of an end of an MR element located in a medium facing surface along the direction orthogonal to the medium facing surface. Each of the second resistor elements has a resistance that varies depending on the location of an end face of a track width defining portion located in the medium facing surface along the direction orthogonal to the medium facing surface.

  • Patent number: 7363641
Abstract: An aligning device for a disk recording medium capable of reducing eccentricity using a simple structure, without an increase in cost, is provided. An aligning member has a tapered portion that contacts with a center hole of a disk, and fits with a guide portion that is fixed to a turntable with a sliding gap therebetween. The sliding gap between the aligning member and the guide portion is formed such that a leading end side sliding gap of the turntable in the sliding direction of the aligning member differs from a trailing end side sliding gap of the disk side in the sliding direction. The leading end side sliding gap is formed smaller than the trailing end side sliding gap. The amount of eccentricity of the disk becomes smaller according to this structure.

  • Patent number: 7359160
Abstract: In general, the invention provides a magnetic head device and linear tape drive that increase the resonant frequency and the range of a servo system. In particular, the invention provides a magnetic head device comprising a magnetic head chip with multiple magnetic head elements that is a structural part of the fine positioning system which allows the magnetic head elements follow the data tracks on the linear magnetic tape. Consequently, weight is reduced thereby increasing the resonant frequency and servo bandwidth. In another embodiment, the invention provides a magnetic head comprising bimodal actuators that are formed into an S shape and displaced by applying voltage where the polarization direction is opposite from one end to the other. In particular, the head chip may remain stable and may be driven dynamically thereby allowing the mechanical resonance of the bimodal actuator (including the head chip) to increase to 1 kHz or higher.

Abstract: A magnetic sensor is provided. The magnetic sensor includes a magnetoresistive multi-layered portion that has a first resistance region and a second resistance region. At least two contacts are coupled to the magnetoresistive multi-layered portion. A sensing current flows from a first contact of the at least two contacts to a second contact of the at least two contacts via the first resistance region and the second resistance region of the magnetoresistive multi-layered portion. The first resistance region promotes a primary flow of the sensing current in a first direction substantially perpendicular to surface planes of the layers of the magnetoresistive multi-layered portion, and the second resistance region promotes the primary flow of the sensing current in a second direction substantially in parallel to surface planes of the layers of the magnetoresistive multi-layered portion.

  • Patent number: 7350217
Abstract: A disk drive device is arranged so as to swing a traversing mechanism which has an optical pickup and a spindle motor mounted thereon. In a shift mechanism of the optical pickup, its outer end in the radial direction of the optical disk is provided to extend beyond a periphery of the optical disk, and in loading, the optical pickup is caused to withdraw to the outer end which is provided to extend. Therefore, as to the optical pickup which is thicker than the spindle motor and determines the thickness of the whole device, the amount of swing of the pickup is decreased while reliably avoiding the contact between the pickup and the optical disk, thus realizing the reduction in thickness of the device. As a result, it is possible to realize front loading of the optical disk at low cost.

  • Patent number: 7349179
Abstract: A magnetic write head provides a significant write field and minimal adjacent track erasure, and lends itself to improved manufacturability. The write head includes a pedestal throat height that defines a bottom pole, P1, and that is substantially recessed from the air bearing surface. The write head further includes a top pole, P2, that defines a nose that is closer to the air bearing surface than the pedestal zero throat. This design achieves a relatively high ratio of the off-track to on-track field. As an example, a 1:4 ratio could be achieved to significantly mitigate the erasure problem of the adjacent tracks resulting from magnetic flux saturation.

  • Patent number: 7336441
Abstract: A planar top yoke in a magnetic write head is disclosed. The top yoke includes a backside region and a second pole tip region that is thinner than the backside region and forms a step at the ABS. Alternatively, a front section of the backside region includes a step with a thickness greater than the second pole tip region. Therefore, flux is directed from a thicker backside region toward the gap side of the second pole tip layer near the ABS. A lower flux density is formed at the top of the step at the ABS which reduces the flank field/gap field ratio and prevents unwanted erasure of adjacent data tracks. A high gap field is achieved while maintaining a low flank field during high write current conditions. The step recess from the ABS toward the backside region is about 0.2 to 2 microns.
