  • Patent number: 7050265
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a rotary head drum unit including a cylindrical drum surface and a magnetic head for recording/reproducing a signal to/from a magnetic tape running along the drum surface. The magnetic head has a tape sliding surface adapted to come into sliding contact with the magnetic tape. The tape sliding surface of the magnetic head is positioned at a level lower than the height of the magnetic tape flying above the drum surface. The magnetic tape is brought into contact with the tape sliding surface by negative pressure. With this configuration, an increase in contact pressure of the magnetic tape sliding on the tape sliding surface of the magnetic head can be prevented and the contact pressure can be uniformed to thereby prevent a reduction and variations in magnetic recording or reproduction output.

  • Patent number: 7035059
Abstract: A magnetic head having an antiparallel (AP) pinned layer structure having at least two pinned layers with magnetic moments that are self-pinned antiparallel to each other. The pinned layers are separated by an AP coupling layer. A bias layer with a pinned magnetic moment is spaced apart from the AP pinned layer structure. A free layer is positioned between the AP pinned layer structure and the bias layer. At least one of the pinned layers extends beyond track edges of the free layer in a direction parallel to the ABS. Optional antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers can be positioned outside the track edges of the free layer in a direction parallel to the ABS (but not necessarily aligned with the free layer). The AFM layers pin a magnetic orientation of portions of the pinned layer closest thereto that are positioned outside the track edges of the free layer.

  • Patent number: 7032233
Abstract: A disk cartridge has a write protect portion for switching between a write-allowed state and a write-inhibited state. The write protect portion is equipped with two prisms having reflection faces different in reflectivity which are rotatably supported therein. In a drive device in which the disk cartridge is loaded, an amount of light, which is irradiated to the write protect portion and then reaches a photodetecting portion of the drive device, is varied by rotating a shaft. On the basis of the amount of the light reaching the photodetecting portion, the drive device judges whether the disk cartridge is in a write-inhibited state. According to the disk cartridge, dust-proof performance is not lost, and occurrence of mis-detection due to deformation of the disk cartridge can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 7019944
Abstract: Provided is a thin film magnetic head capable of inhibiting the occurrence of track erasing and improving the reliability of magnetic recording. Two taper surfaces are disposed on both sides of a return yoke layer. As no corner portion which may induce concentration of a magnetic flux exists on the both sides of the return yoke layer, even if the magnetic flux emitted from a pole layer is returned to the return yoke layer through a hard disk, a magnetic field strength is not locally and pronouncedly concentrated in proximity to the taper surfaces of the return yoke layer. Thereby, the concentration of the magnetic flux can be prevented, and the probability of the occurrence of unnecessary recording decreases, so the occurrence of track erasing can be inhibited, and the reliability of magnetic recording can be improved.
