  • Patent number: 5075347
Abstract: An improved process for forming hydroperoxide derivatives of rubbery polymers. The hydroperoxide derivatives being particularly well suited for use as intermediates in forming graft rubbery polymers. The process involves dissolving a rubbery polymer in a monomer mixture and adding to the rubbery polymer/monomer mixture a photosensitizing agent. The rubbery polymer-monomer mixture is then oxygenated and exposed to light under conditions wherein triplet oxygen is converted to singlet oxygen. The improvement comprises adding to the rubbery polymer/monomer mixture a solvent capable of solubilizing the photosensitizing agent in the rubbery polymer/monomer mixutre. The solubilizer increases the yield of hydroperoxide derivatives of rubbery polymers formed by a factor of 3.

  • Patent number: 5047446
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of treating a free-radical-containing, optionally room-temperature-aged, irradiated, normally solid high-molecular-weight, semi-crystalline propylene polymer material at about from 40.degree. C. to 110.degree. C. for at least about 10 minutes before being exposed to the higher temperatures that deactivate the residual free radicals therein. Treatment of the polymer at the intermediate temperature causes recombination, and better utilization, of free radicals with the production of more long-chain branching. A two-stage fluid bed process, with a first stage at the intermediate temperature for radical recombination and a second radical-deactivation stage at a higher temperature, is preferred.

  • Patent number: 5009970
Abstract: A solid polymer electrolyte is in the form of a gel comprising a complex of a solid polymer (e.g. poly(ethene oxide) and an alkali metal salt (e.g. LiClO.sub.4), the polymer being cross-linked to inhibit its transformation from an amorphous form to a crystalline form thereby to improve the alkali metal ion conductivity of the electrolyte at lower temperatures. The electrolyte may be made by irradiating (e.g. by gamma radiation or an electron beam) a solution, preferably aqueous, of the complex to cause the polymer to cross-link and form a gel. The electrolyte may be used as a component in a solid state electrochemical cell (e.g. for a rechargeable lithium battery), where the gel form of the electrolyte assists fabrication.
