Abstract: A technique relates to stretching an extensible molecule. The molecule moves through an array of pillars in a flow direction, where the array has an interface connecting a first pillar region and a second pillar region. Stretching the molecule by traversing the molecule in the flow direction through the interface connecting the first pillar region to the second pillar region, such that a first end and a second end of the molecule straddle a straddle pillar, thereby causing the first end to extend along a first path in the second and the second end to extend along a second path. Traversing the molecule stretches the first end and the second end along two different paths. The molecule is further traversed through the array such that the second end follows the first end along the first path, where the stretching causes the molecule to be in an uncoiled state.

Abstract: Methods for screening molecules or moieties for their ability to crosslink are disclosed. An aromatic carbonate, aromatic ester, or aliphatic ester group is attached to the molecule to mimic the presence of a polymer. A solution of the modified molecule is irradiated, and the first-order kinetic rate constant is measured. If the rate constant is high enough or a threshold amount of the molecule is consumed, a polymer is synthesized using the molecule/moiety as an endcap or co-monomer. The polymer is irradiated, and the increase in crosslink density and the gel formation percentage are determined. These parameters, if high enough, indicate the suitability of the molecule/moiety to act as a crosslinking agent, particularly for polycarbonates. Alternatively, the molecule/moiety may be identified as suitable solely by its first-order kinetic rate constant.
Abstract: A method for detecting a list of known biopolymer molecules comprises: calculating, for each biopolymer, a respective list of oligomer molecules predicted to be produced by chemical processing; calculating, for each oligomer molecule, a respective predicted chromatographic elution time period; assigning, for each biopolymer molecule, one or more selected oligomer molecules to be detected, wherein the selecting is performed using weighted selection probabilities determined from the predicted elution times; scheduling a plurality of oligomer detection events of a detection system, wherein each oligomer detection event corresponds to a respective one of the predicted elution time periods; performing the chemical reaction or processing of the sample to generate a processed sample; introducing the processed sample into a chromatographic system; introducing any eluting oligomers into the detection system; and operating the detection system so as to search for each of the selected oligomer molecules in accordance wi
Abstract: Provided is a nanoporous cantilever including a substrate in a shape of a plate, a tip formed at a front end of the substrate, and a nanoporous structure formed on the tip. Due to the nanoporous structure including nanopores and nanochannels formed on the tip, the nanoporous cantilever greatly increases in detection sensitivity for a material to be detected when compared to a cantilever according to a related art, and may obtain a surface-enhanced Raman signal and thus achieve discrimination of a molecule to be detected.

Abstract: Methods of classifying pleural fluid are disclosed. The methods typically include determining the level of indicator nanoparticles, such as lipids, particularly large lipids, in the pleural fluid of a subject. The level of lipids can be determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), such as proton NMR (1H-NMR) by measuring the NMR signal corresponding to methyl protons, methylene protons, methene protons, or combinations thereof. The level of large lipids in pleural fluid can be carried out in vitro on a sample of pleural fluid obtained from the subject or in vivo using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). The pleural fluid can be classified as exudate or transudate with a sensitivity, selectivity, or combination thereof of 85%, 90%, 95%, 99%, or higher, a selectivity of 85%, 90%, 95%, 99%. The method can be coupled with diagnosing and/or treating the subject with a disease, disorder, or condition.
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed wherein neutrons are produced by a photon induced process 2D(?,n) and the ensuing neutrons are thermalized and captured by hydrogen producing a 2.223 MeV gamma that is used to identify and quantify the presence of hydrogen and which, when combined with NRF signals from certain isotopes, can be used to establish the nature of a hydrogenous compound or a mixture of hydrogenous materials or a mixture of hydrogenous materials with other non-hydrogenous materials. The method is useful to establish, e.g., the presence and quantification of explosives, toxic substances and general contraband as well as the flow of materials in a production line or shipping venue.

Abstract: A fluidic cartridge for processing a liquid sample comprises a main channel for passing the liquid sample therethrough from an upstream end to a downstream end; and one or more branch channels that join the main channel for introducing liquid and gas into the main channel after the liquid sample has passed downstream of the one or more branch channels. The one or more branch channels including a first branch channel, wherein the first branch channel comprises: a gas inlet for introducing a gas into the first branch channel; a liquid inlet for introducing a liquid into the first branch channel; and a valve configured to move between a closed position in which it prevents liquid and gas in the first branch channel from passing into the main channel and an open position in which it permits liquid and gas in the first branch channel to pass into the main channel.
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for the analysis of a compound with amino group (e.g., an amino acid or peptide) contained in a sample and convenient manner with a high sensitivity. The compound with amino group in a sample containing the compound with amino group is labeled with a specific carbamate compound such as p-trimethylammonium anilyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate iodide to enhance the selectivity and sensitivity. The present invention is preferably used in conjunction with mass spectrometry such as MS/MS method to facilitate quantitative analysis. The present invention further provides labeling reagents for mass spectrometry.
Abstract: Provided is a method of evaluating a resin capable of quantitatively evaluating a deterioration degree of the resin with high accuracy and ease.
