  • Patent number: 6975817
Abstract: An intelligent on-board monitoring system for replaceable module for a printing apparatus includes a memory element, an input for receiving information either from sensors on the replaceable module, or from the printing apparatus concerning printing operations performed, and a microprocessor connected to the memory for performing calculations upon data stored in the memory and upon the input information. The calculations produce results related to the performance of the replaceable module. These results can either be communicated to the printing apparatus, or used to control an adjustable operating parameter of the replaceable module itself, all without requiring computational resources of the printing apparatus itself.

  • Patent number: 6970663
Abstract: An image forming device prints on specialty media comprising a first and second area having different media properties. The device prints on the first area at a first transfer voltage level selected in response to a media property of the first area. The device prints on the second area at a second transfer voltage level selected in response to a media property of the second area. The device changes from the first transfer voltage level to the second transfer voltage level when a predetermined location on the specialty media, on which no image is formed, is within the transfer nip.

  • Patent number: 6970674
Abstract: A belt transporting device for circulatingly transporting an endless belt, which is in use with an image forming apparatus, such as copying machine or a printer. The belt transporting device includes a plurality of tension rolls, an endless belt laid on the tension rolls, the endless belt having a belt-end edge part protruding from an end of one of the tension roll and a guide member provided in the vicinity of the endless belt. The guide member comes in contact with the belt-end edge part so as to bend the belt-end edge part in a tapering-off direction. The guide member regulates the shape of the belt-end edge part so that a rotary peripheral length of the belt-end edge part becomes smaller than that of an area where a rear side of the endless belt is in contact with the tension roll.

  • Patent number: 6968145
Abstract: A rotary developing device having a cylindrical rotary developing unit, and a plurality of development members mounted around the periphery of the rotary developing unit. The rotary developing unit is driven to bring one of the development members to the developing position facing a photoreceptor and subsequently the transmission of the driving power to the development member is conducted. In the rotary developing device, the driving direction of the development members at a driving power transmitting section is set to be the same as the driving direction of the rotary developing unit and a simple additional structure employing an electromagnetic clutch or a one-way clutch is applied to the driving power transmitting section, thereby avoiding a collision of tooth tops between gears, damping the impact generated by a collision, and reducing vibration and damage of tooth tops. Therefore, the production of image defects due to registration error are prevented.

  • Patent number: 6965744
Abstract: Disclosed herein are economical methods and apparatuses for controlling a printer based on whether there are toner stations designated as “special toner stations.” Specifically, a printer running a print job is controlled based on whether a hold jobs mode is enabled only for the special toner stations. If the hold mode procedure is not enabled, printing is then allowed. If the hold jobs mode is enabled only for special toner stations, the identity of the installed toner is determined. Additionally, if the hold mode procedure is enabled, the print job is subjected to additional procedures before being allowed to print. These additional procedures may include determining if any predefined attributes exist for the job ticket and automatically applying these attributes, placing the print job into a “hold status,” permitting manual changes to be made to the print ticket, and forwarding notification of the print job upon its completion.

  • Patent number: 6963710
Abstract: A rotary developing apparatus having a plurality of developing devices mounted along the outer periphery of a cylindrical rotary unit. A first gear train for connecting the rotary unit to a drive source to rotate the rotary unit. A second gear train for connecting a developing roller of a developing device revolved and stopped at a developing position, as a result of the rotary unit being rotationally driven, to the drive source to rotate the developing roller. The rotary unit and the developing roller are rotated with the same motor used as the drive source by switching between the connections of the gear trains, thereby rapidly damping vibration generated by the rotation of the rotary unit and vibration generated by the rotation of the developing roller, and thus eliminating image defects due to displacement, etc.
