  • Patent number: 8142434
Abstract: A bone plate mounted on a bone. The bone plate has at least one opening for receiving a flush mounted cam. A through-bore passes from a side surface to opposing side surface of the bone plate. The through-bore has a diameter sized to allow insertion of a cable. A portion of the through-bore intersects with a peripheral portion of the opening. A second opening also passes from the side surface to opposing side surface. A cable may be inserted in the second opening, wrapped around the bone and its free end inserted in the through-bore. The cable may be tightened around the bone. The flush mounted cam can be rotated in place. Rotation of the cam results in the cam surface squeezing the cable between concave cam surface and walls of the opening, thereby locking the cable in the tightened state.

  • Patent number: 8142503
Abstract: Bone implantable devices and methodologies permit careful application of biologically active substances and management of bone growth processes. The device includes a body defining a carrier receiving area for locating adjacent bone. Carrier material is located in the carrier receiving area. Substance is delivered onto carrier material through a port. A pathway delivers substance from the carrier receiving area to the bone surface. The body may be in the form of a spinal fusion cage, facet fusion screw, artificial joint, bone fixation plate, interbody graft, IM nail, hip stem, or other bone-to-bone appliances or bone-to-device appliances. In use, carrier is installed in the carrier receiving area of the device. The device is then implanted adjacent a bone. The substance is applied to the carrier for subsequent delivery to the bone. By doping carrier material after device implantation, inadvertent contact of the substance with non-target bone is more easily eliminated.

  • Patent number: 8141528
Abstract: The invention relates to an actuating device for two parallel rotating camshafts. The aim of the invention is to optimize the installation space required for such a device. For this purpose, both camshafts (3, 4) consist of two shafts that rotate concentrically one inside the other and that can be rotated in relation to each other. On one end of the camshafts (3, 4), one of the two shafts (3?, 3?; 4?, 4?) is driven by the crankshaft (1) via a single, directly acting force-transmitting element (2). A phase adjuster (5) is provided on the other end of the camshafts (3, 4) and allows the simultaneous adjustment of both shafts (3?, 4?; 3?, 4?) in relation to each other by means of a force-transmitting element (6) acting on the phase adjuster (5).

  • Patent number: 8145926
Abstract: In general, in one aspect, the disclosure describes running a cooling fan within a computer at low speed while the computer is in low temperature operations (e.g., idle). The operation of the cooling fan may reduce processor (CPU) temperature enough to decrease processor leakage power, offsetting the power consumption of the fan, and possibly resulting in a net system power reduction. The benefit at the platform level increases further when considering the low efficiency of voltage regulation (VR) in this lower power regime, and potentially reductions in other components (e.g., graphics processor). The optimal fan speed is the speed at which the overall system power is reduced the most (e.g., processor power savings is greater than fan power utilized). The optimal temperature may be determined dynamically during operation or may be determined in manufacturing and applied statically during operation.

  • Patent number: 8141352
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, an NOX selective reducing catalyst is arranged in the engine exhaust passage, and an NOX storage catalyst able to store NOX contained in the exhaust gas is arranged at the upstream of the NOX selective reducing catalyst. The NOX storage catalyst is fed with mist fuel, and the NOX stored in the NOX storage catalyst and the fed fuel are used to produce an intermediate product comprising bonded molecules comprised of NH2 and a hydrocarbon molecule more than an equivalent ratio with respect to one NOX molecule. These intermediate products are adsorbed at the NOX selective reducing catalyst, whereby the adsorbed intermediate product reduces the NOX in the exhaust gas.

  • Patent number: 8143990
Abstract: A microfluidic bubble fuse is formed from a hermetically sealed reservoir containing an electrically conductive liquid. The reservoir is interposed between a pair of electrodes such that each electrode is in electrical contact with the fluid within the reservoir, and such that the fluid within the reservoir provides electrical interconnectivity between the electrodes. The reservoir may be implemented on a substrate, in a tube, or in another manner. When the current or voltage across the electrodes increases beyond a threshold, the excess current or voltage will cause a bubble to be created within the fluid to reduce or inhibit the flow of electricity between the electrodes. When the current/voltage is reduced, the bubble will collapse to restore the flow of electricity between the electrodes.

  • Patent number: 8143768
Abstract: Novel configurations for a miniature vibrating beam mechanical resonator provide low energy transfer to a supporting structure and low sensitivity to mounting misalignment. A symmetric suspended portion includes two vibrating beams that vibrate normal to a quiescent plane of the resonator, 180 degrees out of phase relative to one another. The vibrating beams are attached, at least at one end, to a torsional coupling element that is joined to a mounting pad along a non-translating suspension boundary. Counterbalances are attached to the vibrating beams, and the resonator is configured such that dynamic forces and moments coupled to each torsional coupling element from the vibrating beams are balanced along each nominal non-translating suspension boundary proximate to the symmetry axis and along the symmetry axis proximate to each nominal non-translating suspension boundary. Each non-translating suspension boundary is a torsional axis for a twisting deformation of the first torsional coupling element.
