    Abstract: A method for synthesizing noise in a digital image comprises the steps of (a) estimating noise statistics based on a set of spatial autocorrelation coefficients and a set of spectral correlation coefficients that correspond to the color channels of the image, where at least one of the spatial autocorrelation coefficients is weighted by at least one of the spectral correlation coefficients, thereby providing a weighted set of autocorrelation coefficients, and where a set of filter coefficients is obtained from the weighted set of autocorrelation coefficients; and (b) synthesizing a synthetic texture by using the filter coefficients to filter a random noise field in each of the color channels, thereby producing output noise fields in each of the color channels that replicate a synthetic texture, e.g., a desired grain appearance, when combined into the digital image.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for identifying foreign objects and debris (FOD) and defects during fabrication of a composite structure. The system includes at least one light source positioned to emit light that illuminates a portion of the composite structure with bright field illumination and that also illuminates another portion of the composite structure with dark field illumination. The bright field illumination is reflected differently by defects in the composite structure than from portions of the composite structure that are defect free. The dark field illumination is reflected differently by FOD on the composition structure than from surfaces of the composite structure that are FOD free. The system also includes at least one camera for receiving images of the illuminated portions of the composite structure. The images received by the camera may be processed by a processor which then outputs a response identifying defects and foreign objects and debris based on the images.

    Abstract: A piezoelectric thin film sensor array is used to scan and capture biometric data, for example, a fingerprint image. In one embodiment, a multi-layer structure includes a PVDF layer in between two conductor grids arranged orthogonally to one another. Urethane can be added to one side where a finger is placed. A foam substrate can be used as a support. In one feature, the PVDF, and grids can be peeled off like a label for easy replacement. Multiplexers are switched to scan the sensor. A single pixel or a group of pixels can be detected and output to an image memory. The presence of a fingerprint ridge is detected by virtue of a ring-down oscillation that arises from reflection when an electric field is applied to the piezoelectric thin film sensor array at a pixel in contact with the fingerprint ridge.     Abstract: The disclosure describes a method of progressively decoding a digital watermark on a distributed computing platform. A client device equipped with a digital camera, such as a PDA or cell phone, captures a digital image of a watermarked object, and pre-filters the image to isolate a portion of the image data suspected of containing a digital watermark. The pre-filter de-correlates a portion of the image data suspected of containing a digital watermark from the remaining host image signal using a predictive filter. The client then quantizes the filtered data and progressively transmits the quantized data to a watermark decoder. The progressive transmitter sends image data as necessary to achieve a valid decoding operation. To reduce bandwidth requirements, the transmitter starts with the most highly quantized version of the filtered image, and sends lesser quantized versions until the watermark decoder completes a successful decoding operation.

The detected edges are segmented into discrete line segments, which are subsequently geometrically evaluated with respect to each other to identify any crystal-like qualities such as, for example, parallel lines, facing each other, similarity in length, and relative proximity.
