  • Patent number: 6456751
Abstract: A system is provided to obtain loss optimized output optical power by way of feedback control and stabilization in an optical signal switching or routing system. The optical signal switching or routing system includes at least two input optical fibers and at least two output optical fibers, a controllable mechanism for directing an optical beam from one of the input optical fibers to one of the output optical fibers, and a mechanism for measuring the optical power applied to output optical fiber. The measuring mechanism provides a measure of the output optical power through a signal processing apparatus to a control apparatus. Possible other inputs to the signal processing apparatus include the input optical power, test optical power, etc. The inputs to the signal processing apparatus are compared and the signal processing apparatus outputs a signal to the control apparatus to provide optimized output power.

  • Patent number: 5724469
Abstract: An adjustable fiber storage plate for optical or composite fibers has a commodious open plate design that comprises a base divided into two sections releasably held together; a cylindrical ring extending radially outward from the base, with half the ring extending from one section and half from the other, wherein, when the sections are together, the ring forms a circle having a radius at least equal to the minimum bend radius for an optical fiber; and at least one fiber fastening means in each section, attached to the ring and to the base plate so that a fiber can be held in position around the ring and adjacent to the base. The sections can be mounted together so that the fiber is stored in a circular configuration, or apart, such that the fiber is stored in an oval configuration. Placement of the sections at different distances varies the storage capacity of the plate.

  • Patent number: 5175787
Abstract: This invention provides birefringent optical waveguide structures of crystalline aluminum garnet of a high refractive index which are clad with crystalline aluminum garnet of a lower refractive index. Due to predetermined lattice mismatch between garnet substrate and cladding layer, strain is induced which causes a stress with resultant birefringence in the waveguide layer. When linearly polarized light enters such stressed waveguide in certain orientations, the linear polarization will be preserved by the stress-induced birefringence. These birefringent clad waveguides can be in the form of slabs, channels, ribs, or any of the typical optical waveguide structures. They are useful at high temperature.
