Patent number: 6958826Abstract: A controller for a printer module having a printhead that prints an image on printable media including a low speed central processing unit with associated program memory storing program steps for execution by the central processing unit to operate the printer module and associated scratch memory to store program variables. An image to be printed is stored in an image storage memory of approximately 1.3 Mbytes. An image access unit accesses the image and transfers the image to a printhead interface on command from the central processing unit. The printhead interface transforms the image to a 1600 dpi dithered CMY image for printing by a monolithic printhead. The controller also includes one or more interface units communicating with components of said printer module under control of the central processing unit. A Serial Bus interface communicates with the Serial Bus of a compact printer system to transfer data and power between modules.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2000Date of Patent: October 25, 2005Assignee: Silverbrook Research PTY LTDInventors: Simon Robert Walmsley, Paul Lapstun

Patent number: 6954287Abstract: A color printing process, printing a color image in which out-of-gamut original colors are present. For each pixel defined by an original color which is determined to be out of gamut, a gamut remapping process is applied to map each pixel to a color which is within a printer gamut, remapping said pixels to colors within an output printer gamut. For a given set of gamut remapped pixels, gamut remapped pixel colors are compared with said original pixel colors, to derive a comparison metric. Using the comparison metric, a corrected set of gamut remapped colors is generated. The comparison metric may be subjected to an adaptive filtering process, which strengthens the comparison metric in high frequency image regions to increase its impact on the gamut remapped colors, and weakens the comparison metric in low frequency areas, to weaken its impact on the gamut remapped colors.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1999Date of Patent: October 11, 2005Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Thyagarajan Balasubramanian, Ricardo L. de Queiroz, Reiner Eschbach, Wencheng Wu

Patent number: 6937360Abstract: An image forming apparatus and a control method for the apparatus are disclosed. In this image forming apparatus which has a printing unit selectively using a desired one of a plurality of types of ink cartridges and can receive monochromatic and color facsimile images, appropriate ink remaining amount detection or appropriate received facsimile image printing control can be performed in accordance with the type of received image and the type of loaded cartridge. In receiving/printing monochromatic and color images, a received image is discriminated as a color or monochromatic image, and the type of cartridge currently loaded into an ink-jet printing unit capable of performing printing operation by selecting one of a plurality of printing capabilities is discriminated. In accordance with these discrimination results, control is performed to automatically print the received image using the printing unit or stored it in an image memory or the like.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2000Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Atsushi Ikeda, Koichi Matsumoto, Masaaki Inde

Patent number: 6900902Abstract: A copying machine performs a panel operation necessary for copying at a step S601 and performs ACS determination for determining whether an original image is a color image, a monochrome image or an indefinite image at a step S603. Then, the copying machine performs copying at a step S605 according to a print mode responsive to a result of ACS determination. At this time, a printed paper for an indefinite image is discharged to a discharge position different from that for another printed paper. The copying machine displays the result of the ACS determination on an operation panel at a step S607. Therefore, an original determined as the indefinite image can be recognized at a glance so that a countermeasure can be immediately taken if reprinting is necessary.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2000Date of Patent: May 31, 2005Assignee: Minolta Co., Ltd.Inventor: Hiroharu Tanaka

Patent number: 6897968Abstract: An independent hardware pixel counter counts bits of print data in regions of interest. The independent pixel counter can be an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), and is separate from a control processor. The independent hardware pixel counter selectively monitors a data bus carrying image data to or from a memory. Once the pixels of the image data have been counted, the count data can be sent to the control processor in order to implement a print strategy. The pixel counter counts the print data at a point when image data is being sent to the memory, since at that point the image data is both uncompressed and in a raster format, and thus can be easily analyzed. Additionally, because the image data is stored in the memory until enough print data has accumulated for printing, the processor is provided with sufficient time to gather and use print information before the counted image data is printed.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1999Date of Patent: May 24, 2005Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Roger Guy Markham

Patent number: 6894803Abstract: In an arrangement in which an image captured by photography is recorded on new-type photographic film having an information recording zone for magnetically recording information relating to the film or frames on the film, information concerning the aspect ratio of the image is exploited in an effective manner and the aspect ratio is capable of being altered at will. The image recorded on the new-type photographic film and the aspect ratio information in the information recording zone are read by a film scanner. Original digital image data obtained by the reading operation, length X and width Y of the image and effective image size data (length A and width B) generated from the aspect ratio information are recorded on a floppy disk or optical disk by a disk device. When an original image represented by the original digital image data obtained from the floppy or optical disk is displayed, the size thereof is made that stipulated by the effective image size.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: May 17, 2005Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventor: Norihisa Haneda
